Cockroaches seem to be very smart. You get the impression they know when you are after them, are very fast and experts at hiding. If they are smart enough to know we are trying to kill them, why don't they use their wings more often. I've only seen a few of them fly to get from place to place. Usually really big/old ones (probably the wise ones.)

I've once spent a good 5 minutes chasing a flying roach around the living room. It's not a particularly good flyer (e.g. compared to a housefly) although being able to outsmart me, it doesn't corner well. I think on the ground they are faster. But generally they do seem to fly less than I would did I have the ability.
God! You guys are really hitting it really bad! I know everyone's waiting for school to reopen and it's kind of boring. But cockroaches?

Did I mention the giant rat that was caught in my glue trap?
louischuahm:
Yes, I've seen some of these huge (I mean HUGE) monsters. I always wonder how the hell they get so big here. Bigger than cats.
Cockroaches can fly like chickens. Badly.
Although, I swore I once saw one flying outside the 17th floor of a scyscraper.
ScotsAlan:
It probably lived on the 24th floor and got fed up waiting for the elevator
I would imagine it's to do with energy efficiency.
They probably use up their energy store quicker if they fly.
a colleague related one afternoon how he was attacked by a flying cockroach in the shower.
There are not many things that i dislike, but the thought of a large flying insect made me take fast showers for weeks after

You should take caution, when you shower! If I see something flying around, I quickly cover myself. Animal can carry remote cam…..NSA and things…...
they are smart, vengeful, and can communicate with each other. go sit down at a little run-down outside bar in Ermita, on Manila Bay and squash a few big ones on the ground; no shortage of available victims lol. then watch what happens. Swarms of them will 'dive-bomb' you. super creepy! but fascinating too....
they fly good enuf, might not be on par with a bird, but a hell of a lot better than I bet most people would suspect~
coineineagh:
That sounds more like a water beetle to me. They look very similar, and can grow quite big in the tropics. I once saw one divebombing a metal trash container in malaysia, for whatever reason its neural ganglia decided that was a good idea. sounded like shots were being fired. cockroaches aren't that social, and will canibalize corpses rather than seek revenge.

ok. thanks for the clarification. I swear they even sent a baby one to walk over on the wall to gather intelligence on us, or that's sure what it seemed like! amazing creatures. and for me creepy as could be ! adults pushing 2 inches stem to stern. have one of those suckers fly in your face is the definition of creepy !
you guys are creepy. cockroaches? really? But I do have my way to drive them away from my department. Onion.
I often envision, I am snake. Especially in the morning, when I must stand up, and move out of my bed.....ssssshhhhhsssssshhhhsssswiss, and here I am! Much more convenient than walk!
