Q: If you're behind someone at an atm at night...
If you're behind someone at an atm at night, what should you do to let them know you're not a threat...? (By giving them a gentle kiss on their neck...?)
I dont stand behind anyone at a Chinese ATM. Life is too short to stand there while they do a dozen 50 rmb transactions and call their spouse for yet another account's password.
I go find an ATM with no people at it.
RandomGuy:
I never understand why they need to spend so much time at the ATM, or any place with a queue for that matter.
It has to be a part of the face thing, "I am important so I can make people wait behind me until I am done", but it's just so stupid and annoying, they end up looking like jerks instead of VIPs.
Sometimes when it happens at the supermarket I just throw my stuff onto the cash desk and give them some cold hard stare, trust me they speed up the process.
I always stand a reasonable distance behind them. Basically don't stand breathing down the back of their neck.
Though this his can give you a problem in China as someone will then walk in front of you and jump the queue.

I look at them in the eyes with a mad stare and yell at them "I'M NOT A MENACE !!!". You gotta be loud and clear, you know...
DrMonkey:
Yes, of course ! I mean, everybody speaks English in movies, even aliens.
I smile at them while raising a brick above my head with two arms.
No faster way to clear a line.
wouldn't use an ATM at night - anywhere - unless i was alone or with a friend.
I have found that Chinese men become more 'brave' at night, but it could just be the baiju.
Robk:
That could be true but actually most Chinese guys start dipping into the baijiu during lunch... they have to... to please their bosses and co-workers.
Then their boss goes to a massage parlor or home to sleep it off while the employees have to go back to work drunk and sober up.
I try to look over their shoulder and then start mumbling numbers to myself.... u know, like... 8, 3, 7, 0, 1, 1, 7,...
for some reason they seem to get all weirded out about that !
If you're behind someone at an atm at night, worry more about your own safety than some stranger's peace of mind.
