Q: I'm feeling v strange today..... Am I alone?
I have this strange feeling going on inside myself that has come as something of a surprise, esp given I've been here for 5 years and I can be somewhat on the negative side from time to time.
What is it?
I'm feeling a strange kind of love for Chinese ppl. Love and admiration.
I don't think I'm turning Chinese or anything. But today I feel like I love them.
Sure, I definitely love my wife. (Actually, I really love her a lot and, given I'm a hard bastard, that would surprise many who've known me for a long time.)
But today I find myself barracking for China...I feel like I want them to overcome their hurdles. I want them to have happy and productive lives.
While in the small shop buying beer this afternoon I could hardly resist the urge to hug the lady and her daughter. I felt almost overcome by their friendliness and openness.
In my spastic Chinese I told them how lucky I felt to be here. I'm sure they couldn't understand me though.
In fact, the feeling started last night. We were out at a Lantern Festival thing and all I could see was happiness all around.
And just before I wrote post I contacted some locals via text and wished them plain sailing.
I'm pretty sure this is all new for me. I mean, if I was pregnant I would write it off the that. But I'm not.
Have you ever felt similar feelings toward Chinese ppl? Like admiration, respect, love, hope....
Perhaps I'm going mad....

Can't say I felt it that deeply but on Wednesday I got back from nearly 3 weeks in Europe (UK & Italy) & while it was a great holiday my feeling as I walked out of Baiyun airport (even after the bloody Ebola check queue!) was "great, I'm home"!
this is weird.... yes I am feeling very different today.... I am having beer, but it is not the beer,,(do that often),,,,it is something else ... I am and always have been happy here....love my dear wife.... I think it has to do with the end of CNY...finally ... 6 weeks I have been putting up with that. ......but I did that before and it was no big deal.......today has been a "strange" and "good" day ......I just feel HAPPY, for whatever reason ... good day!!!!!

Yeah I feel the same sometimes. Actually, no I never want to hug people but probably that's just me being my prudish self. Aside from that though..
But yes I have days where I wake up in a good mood, go outside and see people just going about their lives, dealing with their shit the same as me, being happy where they can, greeting me when I buy something with a smile and a joke and I don't feel like such a stranger here and I think people are basically the same everywhere you go.
But then, for me, it's also like Mike said... just give it time and someone will piss on your parade.
There's such a thing as a Good China Day ^^ You feel part of the landscape, you feel accepted as a local, you had a meaningful talk, a smile, somebody held the door, all in the same day. Enjoy it while it last.
I also had a Good China day, this morning I received praises from my company's CEO for my excellent work, this evening I was shopping clothes for warmer days in Zhujiang NT and many hot looking girls gave me smiles or sweet looks. The only annoyance today was a couple of peasants talking about the laowai while riding the subway for a good 30 minutes and trying for at least half of this time to reach an agreement on whether or not I understood what they were saying, it would have been easier to ask me directly.
I have had a bad European weak.
Chinese colleagues... fantastic. Western colleagues... bah. Not all of course. Just one.
But there must be something in the air today. As I was walking home from work I got a massive " HEELLLLLLOOOOO hehehe" from a security guy in a fibreglass hut.
I returned a cheery "Hello" with an enthusiastic wave
It should be noted of course, that my walk home involves passing a bar
