Q: "I'm making millions in {insert business} but I still work at some English training center"

Seriously? I have come across such delusional individuals more and more often recently. What's going on?

'Oh, it's for the visa and all the free time it allows me to do...whatever it is they do.'

You meet some really interesting characters in China. Some are complete bullshit artists, some have genuinely done what they say and some are just batshit crazy.

I think places like China attract those interesting people.

I can assure you that anyone making 7 figures or more in RMB will have no problem securing any kind of visa, company or not. I think 99% of them are bullshit artists.

Haven’t met any such individuals.

*edit* Now that I think about it, my school just fired a girl because she was traveling around China trying to become a famous singer or something. She only taught 4 classes over the entire term; kept making up stories about how ill she was to cancel her classes, but would post photos/videos of her (terrible) shows in her WeChat moments.

iWolf:

By any chamce is she a russian wannabe jazz singer?

In China 'model' and 'singer' are synonyms with 'hooker', fact.

Oh? Don't you know that doing prostitution/drug dealing/scamming makes sooooo much more, but you obviously want to have a proper occupation that you can tell when people ask about what you do?laugh

Trust fund kid likely. Seeing the world. Sent out to sow his her oats.

When I lived in a tax haven (as a half blue half white collar), a mate of mine down the pub had the job of sending out the monthly allowances to the trust fund kids. He told me it was shocking. He was doing transfers of 50k US, and they were complaining of being skint 2 weeks into the month.

These dudes are Regonomics in action.

Randomguy is talking about a specific type of expat that lies about having a lot of money, not someone's who's family is rich, it's not a situation where the guy might be telling the truth. It's 100% clear to anyone with a functioning brain that the guy is lying.

I'm a millionaire but I can't afford to take the plane to Hong Kong. I have a business that earns 6 figures but I can't afford to rent without 5 roommates.

So damn easy to understand

ScotsAlan:

Yup. Agree. I know a few millionaires who have pockets so deep they tuck them into their socks. Money is their God. Sgrooges, the lot of them.
