If I have a friend buy a US$300 tablet in the U.S. and then mail it to me, what kind of tax will I have to pay on it?

I would say somewhere around 500 yuan. The actual rate of consumer electronics, which covers from digital cameras to computers, hones and tables (pads), is 10 % of the value on the tables the Chinese officials have, not what it says on the receipt.
Happy's guestimate sounds about right.
this web site can help you http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/
it reveals tax on tablet to be about 300, but there will also be tax on shipping cost (huh?) and it is the price the good people at the customs department think the item is worth. Maybe include some cookies to ease their mind.
You can most likely buy a tablet cheaper in China
You're better off buying it tax-free in Hong Kong and then hauling it back to China yourself. Then you don't need to pay any tax.
I dunno, but watch out for Thailand,,,, fukn thiefs when it comes to that. charged me about 70usd on an item worth maybe 140usd. they do it because they can... you have TWO choices,,,, pay their extortion or lose your property. some choice eh?
