Q: For Infants: any place is good enough as toilet?
After being in China for one year, I still cannot understand that parents or grandparents see it as totally acceptable to let their infant/toddler to void just about any place in public. Recently observed some parents to let this 'happen' in a grocery supermarket. When I watched, they became indignant and told me 'it is normal'. Other shoppers just tried to ignore the 'puddle and pile' and not step into it.
Why is this allowed and accepted as 'normal' in this society/culture? Even in a food store?
To be honest, the only way to get a good, valid answer will be to ask the question to local people. If you ask foreigners, all you will get will be assumptions.
To me it comes from the fact that most city people today were country people not too long ago. And in the country side, when you have to go, you just do it, since it is considered a natural function.
At least for many, or unfortunately for some, it is normally done by children with the help of adults.
After almost 7 years, for me it still boggles the mind. I have no idea what else to say about this other than in my opinion, it's not a "culture thing".

Well i guess being new here i have this to look forward to
I have read about it but fortunately not experienced it yet
It is totally unacceptable.I am really embarrassed for my people's rude behavior.Still,as a Chinese and a father, let me explain why it happened.First,if you know the one couple one child policy, you will understand why Chinese parents love their child so much that sometimes we even spoil child.Second, in public toilet, there always have so many people that one always have to wait long time.Third, public toilet often is not clean. In short, too many human, little resources.
crimochina:
my answer is better than yours, letting your child go anywhere has nothing to do with spoiling them. no offense just differing opinion.
"For Infants"??!!
Do you mean this question is directed at infants???!!!
1. it has to do with chinese people being incredibly cheap. if your average local was given the option of spending one mao more a day to do something that would add 5 years to their life, they would not spend the extra money.
2. chinese people are extremely lazy. if you do not want to spend the money for diapers, or are environmentally conscious, fashion a cloth into a diaper. many poor people around the world do this.
3. slaves to tradition. if it was done 5000 years ago why change. china is slow to adapt or accept new ideas. napoleon complex. life at 3 inches really sucks.
You should create a little porta potty for these infants so they won't do it just anywhere. Maybe I will invent one so I can get rich off of that market here in China. Hey nobody else thought about it. It first started with a plastic bottle, and later the carry case porta potty!!
