Q: Info about converting a Z visa to an X visa

I'm thinking about studying in the new year. I'm currently working on a Z visa, how much hassle should I expect (or not expect) with regards to me trying to get an X visa at an official Chinese tertiary educational institution? Will I need to leave to country? Use an agent?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

If you've got an invite letter from the school should have no issue in HK.
