Q: The insane chinese co-worker

I am kind of doing the assistant job to the chinese sales guy,he kowns just a little about export business, but due to my professional export experinces before,I am qualified being a export manager actually. He kowns I am kown export better than him,so he will ask me when come a problem, but the thing is everytime he askes not in a polite way,and never say thank you also, after that he gets a expression of who cares or like he thinks I can't answer (actually only the courier company can answer  that about some shipping fees). He is much older than me and a married man anyway, very argoant.I may think he is afriad to lose his face in front of a young girl who kowns better about this job  than him. What do you think?I don't kown why this company arrange an inexperienced chinese guy to do the export business and me(the professional one to be his assistant),looks like a joke, huh?

Are you not Chinese?

I can't make head nor tail of the meaning of much of that.

Just do your work and pay as little attention to him as possible. If he is that inexperienced, he will be found out.

Scandinavian:

Ted do you think that is the case. In the Chinese business world there are lots of incompetent people who are only there because they have guangxi with the boss. If this is the case, then he will remain, and complaining about him would not do any good either.

TedDBayer:

my first answer was related to boss. Work sucks, made only worse by people you have to work with. It's best just to do your job each day and go home. The last office I managed was all women, I couldn't take it, had to leave.

I would make him lose face no mercy no compassion. He should learn he is of little or no good and he should learn to respect you. Anyway behave yourself and don't get intimidated by his ignorance and rude bahvior.

tks,his rude just show he is not confidence.

What I'm surprised about with this whole thread is... this whole thread!

What you've described is standard business practice in China. What normally happens next, is the assistant starts making their own deals behind the bosses back, building up their own business base and partners, and when the right time comes, they stab that boss person in the back - ie, show them up. (presuming, of course, that the guy who you are describing isn't really that important in the company). You wait for him to go on holidays or something, and then prove that you're better than him.

In the mean time, you do less and less of his job, and make him look more and more incompetent. Then, when things are looking really bad for him, rush in and 'save the day'.

Alternatively, you could point out to him, with your greater experience, you can either make him look good ... or make him look bad. His choice!

What shining_brow said. He's never going to give you the respect you deserve. If you do this right, you can get rid of your incompetent jerk boss and get a promotion for yourself.

Sorry to hear that Victoria!  My boyfriend was in this exact same situation. Eric is my boyfriends name and he is also Chinese. Anyways, Eric worked at an English school and he was supposed to be the marketing manager because he had previous experience, but the boss hired her brother-in-law for the position. It was clear that that man had no idea what he was doing. He always made Eric do his job and run his errands, and sometimes he would use the information Eric got and show it to the boss like it was "his" information.

Later Eric quit, and the company suffered a lot because that man couldn't make any money for the company. In the end, the boss and her brother-in-law had to find a new job hahaha.

So, you have a few options. You could do what Shining_brow suggested, or you could just be patient and wait for that sales guy to mess up. If not, then you can always quit and try to find a better job.

I like Shining Brows last paragraph. You can easily pull this off, after all, he wont report you (Whats he going to do? He would have to admit to his bigger boss that you know more than he does. Two scenarios to consider:

1- Dont suddenly give him only bad info, mix it with the good stuff. Gradually increase the bad stuff so he looks more and more incompetent.

2- Give  him real bad info, and in his greatest moment of ignominy, "save" him (in front of everyone) with the real good stuff that will save the deal! The loss of face will make him quit at once.

Or, you can just rack up the experience and find a new job.

Good luck!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
