Q: Installing internet issues
Hello!
I've been using China Telecom now for one year while living here in Changsha, China.
And when I first moved into this apartment the internet socket wasn't installed so then I gladly paid for them to come here and install it. But now after 1 year, I'll move 2 floors down from my apartment to an apartment where the last person was using the same internet provider. But they still want me to pay 200 RMB for them to come and install it.
But I can't understand what it is that needs to be installed? I mean it's already hooked up to them so why should I pay 200 RMB to them to hook up the boxes when I can just do it myself? Or is there something else that needs to be done?
Anyone encountered same problem and know how to solve it without paying that installation fee? If so please share your experience.
internet socket?.. its not ADSL? not thru telephone line?
Yeah, it's ADSL through the telephone line. I wasn't sure what to call it so I just said internet socket.
I talked to the technician from China Telecom because I will face the same problem in two months. He said (and jump on him, not me) that just unplugging at your present apartment, and plugging at the new one will not do, because the signal goes to your former apartment, not the new one. He said they have to come to some sort of distribution panel located somewhere on ground floor of building, and change the wiring there, moving your particular wire carrying signal for telephone and Internet to your existing apartment to the new one. But he also said why charge, it is supposed to be free (that I do not know for sure, that's what he said).
And a word of caution, with china Telecom, if you do not have fiber optic service, do not pay anything above 1 Mb speed, if you do it will only work up to 1 Mb and nothing else, and waste money. I was at 2 Mb, and he changed me to fiber optic cable at no cost to me.
Thanks a lot for the answer. Really cleared everything for me!
And now when I called them, seems you can use that 200 RMB fee to put in your cellphone and use but since I use China Mobile in my cellphone it's just waste for me. Though, they said I couldn't avoid the fee no matter what. But I have a friend who said now I can contact someone privately to fix it for much less. So will probably go that way.
Bert, it seems you and me have the same set up, I also use China Mobile for my cell phone, even if Telecom gives me a free cell phone with Internet package.
One thing that has paid for me is to have the phone number of the China Telecom repairman. I have done it already maybe 4 times, call him directly and he will be here the same day and fix the problem. And I do always give him from 20 to 30 Rbm tip for a cold one, and as a result, he does look out for me. very common to work on that distribution box downstairs and knock loose another wire.
I used broadband through the telephone line. My girl friend gave me a modeum, some guy came over and hooked it up and I never paid for anything. It was a 1Mb speed but after awhile it got so slow that I often could not use it.
