Q: Internet in China
admin, thx for the indulgence on this not exactly being a China question, but I'm pretty desperate.
I was wondering if any of u computer experts out there might be able to give me some advice regarding the following situation:
It seems like over the last few days accessing most websites has really slowed down. I have been trying to figure out if it is the internet or my computer. I think it's the 'net, but it would put my mind at ease if there was a simple test I could perform to check things out.
I want to watch online news on CNN & Fox. but it just will not do it anymore and as a side note my VPN will not connect.

I am experiencing the same in GZ.
I was talking to the company IT guy about it. He says the Great Fire Wall has been upgraded in the last week. Anything to servers outside China is being filtered.
There was an article on BBC that lots of VPNs have been blocked too.

wow. so blocking information isn't just empty talk anymore? I guess that book 1984 was right, just took 'em awhile. DPRK has a butt-buddy at last ! 
My VPN is becoming increasingly unstable and sometimes it is difficult to find a location to connect to. Fingers crossed though, it is at least still operating to a useable level.
Spookily, I was on a Skype conference call to a group of USA based clients. When the topic of hazards and dangers associated with imported products from China was raised, the connectivity suddenly stopped and I was unable to reconnect until the following morning. It may well have been an unrelated technical issue but the timing just seemed extremely convenient from the Chinese perspective.

I am experiencing the same problems here in Dongguan myself. As mentioned by the above posts this is not your computer.
If you want to check your connection speed a simple search for 'Internet speed test' should give you the following result: http://www.speedtest.net/

I was finally able to run that test:
Ping: 25ms
Download Speed: 10.24 Mbps
Upload Speed: 1.28 Mbps

My VPN died on my sometime today! Won't load anything.
I guess they really did upgrade something.
Hopefully it will come back or maybe this is a permanent arrangement.
I have been thinking about this tonight Diverdude.
I don't think this is some sort of shut the door to stop the news getting out. I think it is something simpler.
The Government announced last summer that they were banning officials and Government departments from using foreign software and foreign email servers. Because, believe it or not, the Chinese Government do not actually have a secure home grown intranet system.
I suspect that directive has been ignored. The shutdown is not against foreigners. It's against officials using VPNs to check the balance of their Swiss bank accounts and to check on their kids facebook as they study in the west on a "scholarship".
They are not shutting it down because a few foreigners might have a bit of a rant now and then. They are trying to corner the rats before they abandon a floating ship in their gold plated lifeboats.
If my theory is true.... then yeah... shut the system down. I can go without internet for a few months if it means they catch these rats. The rats will be the most desperate to get out. They will run straight into the rat trap.
I know this will sound weird but when I connect through dogpile or webcrawler my connections to links are a whole lot faster than if I use Google. Why is this?

some expert can elucidate on this, but the way I understand it google is a top priority for them when it comes to blocking stuff. something to do with google telling them to go F themselves a few years ago....
