Q: Intervene in domestic violence situation?
Last night, saw a Chinese girl and African man arguing loudly and he was threatening her and they were kind of fighting. Lots of old Chinese guys were watching, I think they would step in if it got out of hand but not sure. Should we have intervened, called police, etc?
Ok, I'll ask........How did you know he was African? If you didn't intervene how could you possibly have obtained that nugget of info?

Accent most likely. Might be in Guangzhou also. Can't throw a stick in some places there without hitting some African dude or other. Not that i'm advocating throwing sticks at African gentlemen, that would just be plain rude.
Kind of late now, but if he was actually bullying her, not just rowing and shouting with a bit of arm grabbing but actually hitting her, i'd have intervened. Donned cape and all. Can't abide bullies.
your story is BS , how could you have known he was african #1. and #2 sort of fighting??? what is sort of fighting?? and we all know chinese men don't argue loudly with their girls, and they most certainly do not ever hit them. which is domestic violence. not "sort of fighting".
It is always a tough call if or when you should intervene. You need to keep in mind that when you intervene, their fury will greatly increase and be directed at you, so you need to be aware of that. Also, it is strange but common that even though the couple are fighting each other, if you step in, they may both turn against you.
Step in when blows are being thrown, and be prepared for the worst.

A is beating the tar out of B. You intervene, and kick A's bum. Well, when A and B get home, guess what happens to B now that you are no longer there to protect him/her.
never intervene one night in california some guy was slapping this girl around about 1230 am and it was in my yard and i went out and threw the guy in the bushes and the girl went ballistic on me i couldnt believe it so i just called the police

Good on you for trying, man. Personally I think you have to. Like stepping into tricky situations like Iraq or Vietnam; they might not all appreciate the help, but you gotta do what is right, huh?

No Mrtian, you have to be very careful intervening. You can very easily make it worse for the victim. Who will protect her when she is alone with her husband AFTER he got his but kicked?
And, like bat said above, you run the risk of her turning on you where you could be seriously injured and even face criminal charges.
This , by the way, comes from two and a half years of prosecuting domestic violence crimes.
See, this is crazy. This is a crazy country where people who do the right thing, people who defend the defenseless can get in serious trouble.
