Q: Island dispute between China and Philippines - who's right?
For once, the Chinese media are all over this one - is it because, finally, China has a fair claim over this island?
I don't like to get involved with this kind of stuff but this seems to be getting out of hand recently with all the media hype in China.
China claims it is a traditional and historical part of China now if the whole world had this mentality fuck Mongolia would have a huge claim to the world today with there empire but they don't claim half the modern world do they.
Philippines are closer to the islands than China and also a hunting ground for there fishermen. But really what the countries should be doing is protecting these islands from over fishing, tourism, and defense bases but all they care about is the traditional fishermen who rooted fish on the island a 1000 years ago which makes it a historical part of both countries.
did you happen to see the map that china claims as their territory? it stops at the phils beach. so you go to the beach in the phils , swim a few feet and boom your in china!

While I will not get involved with who is right, I will try to point out the why of the claim. And it is not fishing rights, nor geopolitical issues. It is OIL under the sea bed. All countries involved in the dispute know that there is lots of OIL there, and they all want as much as they can of it. It was on the news recently that China is getting ready to drill its first oil well in this area. And it is not only the Philippines, Vietnam and a few others are also involved.
Who's right?
Do you seriously believe this is an ideological issue? Do you think any country involved gives a shit about a handfull of fishermen? If so, why don't they give half a crap about the impoverished fishermen living in less controversial areas?

Finally? Holy shit. This comes up every few months.
My favourite part about the whole thing is how the Chinese keep announcing that "the world fears a war", as a way of threatening that it will be an aggressor against any country involved, but still making itself look like an innocent oppressed victim of the expansionistic Philippine war machine (lol) in the eyes of its own people.
Oh, china so oppressed. Dying race. Arr country anti-Chinese bias. Poor defenceress China China would be hilariously ridiculous in a cartoony Eldmer Fudd way if they didn't breed fast enough that we have to take them seriously. It's like that episode of the Twilight Zone where the little kid gains godlike powers.
China's territorial claim in the South China Sea goes well beyond the internationally accepted 200 nautical mile zone (under the application of which, China gets nothing). The claim that the traditionally uninhabited islands are an integral part of the Chinese landmass is based on its inclusion in early maps; but then, the Vietnamese also historically mapped and claimed them so they make exactly the same claim.
The Philippine claim came later, and is based on a claim made in the 60s, when Philippino troops actually began to occupy the islands as part of the Philippines island group.
My take China's probably more in the wrong than the rest of the countries who won't accept the UN -standard line. Is poor little China being picked on by the rest of the world? Ummmm.... nup.
