It's been a while we haven't done one of these, and I feel you guys deserve it.
First off, an update:
- We promised a forum, and it's coming, just the technical side of it is taking way longer than expected. Essentially the forum will be incorporated in this Q&A section, so that the only way to access it will be to go through here. The righthand column (with profile, question of the day, users online, etc.) will remain while the entire left portion will be the forum.
I don't want to promise you guys anything in terms of when it'll be out, as I feel bad enough about not meeting the deadlines last time. As I said, it's being tested for bugs. We've been through a huge amount of them already, but it's still not quite there yet. A week? Two? Hard to say...
Other fixes programmed for next week or two:
- disfunctioning internal mail system
- being able to trace positive votes (no consensus was reached concerning negative votes)
- paragraph breaks for comments
- forwarding questions to external emails
Other things we have in mind:
- Spell check for answers
- following people/questions
- being able to spend points on virtual gifts, that you may wish to offer to other users
- etc.
There, that's it from my end. If any of you have technical issues, (constructive) criticism, suggestions, etc... leave 'em here.

Any word on whether the VPN is legit? DaBen was having problems, and I was thinking of cashing in...
adminanswer:
Hey kchur,
I don't handle points and rewards, however I can assure you the VPN is legit, as I personally use it for work. (Though, admittedly, I'm not an expert in such technical things and I was not the one to install it on my computer).
Daben, if you're out there, send us a mail describing the problems you're having.
DaBen:
The "problems" was the not ever receiving it. The Cat saw the comment and past it on. They contacted me back on the 29th, saying the order would be processed in the next couple of days. But honestly I haven't even checked to see if it has arrived yet or not.
crimochina:
let me get in on this. wher'es my flashlight????????????????????????????? keep the flashlight (i found the light switch) refund the points please.
Jnusb416:
I tried to cash in my points for the VPN as well. I also emailed them but received no reply. What's going on?
Sounds good so far. I'm a big fan of paragraph breaks in the comments. I'd also like to see a "quote" button for answer replies. That way I could copy some text and quote other users. It's a pretty common forum type feature. It would be really useful for those questions that actually have 3 or 4 questions together.
TBH, I'm a bit wary of spending points on physical things that need to be sent to me - much too easy for those who might want to to trace me...
But, I'm liking the new ideas!
how about some more emotions buttons as the ones we have could be expanded
as for the past dead lines I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.
We all understand the whole thing is a work in progress
can't wait for the spell checker
You are doing a good job keep it up
best regards
How about the ability to use our own emoticons in questions, and answers, even comments. Copy and paste.
Also why can't we copy the text as we type our answers...only paste?
Anyway things are always getting better here, so cheers.
On that note, whatever happened to points for beer?
thedude:
Also what happened to our ability to post pictures? Is it just me or does this not work anymore? Anyone else try this? If I am wrong, please how do I do it?
crimochina:
they wanted to get rid of that feature before i started posting photos haha
"- being able to trace positive votes (no consensus was reached concerning negative votes)"
*i think you should be able to trace negative pts instead or get rid of it completely.. I posted what I felt was a legitimate question and got 3 neg. pts for what..i don't know?!?
thedude:
Don't worry, there are some petty people on this site that love to thumbs down poeple. The down votes don't affect your points at all.
den:
I'm all for positive votes- i think all legitimate questions and good answers should be awarded- i just don't see a point in having negative votes...serves no constructive purpose.
philbravery:
Ive let it get to me in the past aswell. At least you stand by your post and not a faceless wombat that can't think of anything intelegent to say. so F@$k them and keep up the good work
HugAPanda:
As you said, positive votes are cool... little rewards when used correctly. All the negative votes do is cause drama and contention and should be eliminated.
adminanswer:
There is something to be said for downvotes, though. Spam, really poor or offensive answers get collapsed. Makes my life easier and ensures that if there is something truly annoying, users can save others the displeasure of having to read that. No?
den:
Yes I agree but then again,..doesn't the "Report Abuse" option serve the purpose of really offensive posts or answers?
HugAPanda:
I love being able to assist in a worthy collapse... and for that reason, and that reason alone, the down votes are good. But the animosity they cause for the ones that are DVing just to DV is a bit out of hand, and not worth the ability to collapse.
crimochina:
i have a great idea!! only collapse comments after 3 report abuses!!! or 2?
Just a thought: What about extra points for the poster of questions that get lots of thumbs up or stimulate good debate?
adminanswer:
Yup - we're debating having a question of the week based entirely on votes.
can we get a sarcasm sign
sometimes I feel like im talking to Sheldon Cooper and the sign would be a great help
MrTibbles:
Did you know that there ARE punctuation marks for irony and sarcasm? Do a google search for "irony mark" and "sarcasm mark" or "sarcmark" - they're just not standard in most fonts or on most computers. They do exist though!
I'm wondering if it's possible to make the thumb vote things changeable. I think I just gave jnus a thumbs down and didn't mean to. My track pad thing on my laptop is super sensitive, so I've probably done it before. It would really be cool if we could change our accident votes.
HugAPanda:
Nooo not that one. There is only 1 I habitually vote down. It makes me smile :)
GuilinRaf:
Second thumb up! THAT should cancel the two thumbs down you were given! I know what you mean about accidentally giving thumbs down when wanting to give thumbs up. When that happens to me, I will tell in the comment section about my mistake.
i hope the answer window frame could add more cartoon icons to express people's emotionals. i think that must be fun, and a lots of forum have done it.
Could the thumbs up or down icon be eliminated from the questions since you don't receive any points anyways? o.O
I understand the answers that receive a thumbs up gets points and can get collapsed if they have too many thumbs down but on the questions it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. There is never a dumb question the only question that is dumb are the one's that don't get asked or something like that. That's what I've always heard. But these thumbs down trolls just seem to mark thumbs down on everything: questions and answers.
adminanswer:
We intend to reward (possibly lock) questions based on votes. I also, respectfully, disagree with most of what you said, including the part about dumb questions not existing. I'm in a good position to know that's not true.
kchur:
Mattaya, for better or for worse, you've been the most prolific thumbs-downer on this site.
GuilinRaf:
I have noted that there are some offensive statements disguised as questions. For examply, "Why are Martians (to not use any particular state or race) the scum of the Earth" goes beyond being a "dumb question" and s hould be deleted as such. To use this same example, there are many that are indeed hostile (H.G. Wells classis "The War of the Worlds") but there are also some that are noble (Jon Jonz, a.k.a. Martian Manhunter).
adminanswer:
Guilin, I'm always on the prowl for links. Send 'em my way... B.C.
