Q: Is it acceptable, in your view, for young children (6 years or younger) to wear make-up?

As the title question asks.

Even for performances?  Even if they are not starring?

I find it a bit vain.

It's okay I think. Not a big deal.

Just don't let them wear bikinis.

Well, for stage performances and television, makeup is necessary in order to allow the face to "be seen".

The only time I ever wore makeup was one time many years ago when I was being interviewed by a news team in Puerto Rico about Domestic Violence.  I was reluctant to wear it and was horrified when it was applied. However, much to my relief, when I saw a myself on television two days later, I did not see so much as  a trace of it.

GuilinRaf:

Edit:

However, when they give sexy makeup to little girls for beauty pageants, I am disgusted. No matter what people say, beauty pageants ARE about sex. If an 18 year old girl (or any girl who has reached the "age of consent" ) wants to participate in that, that is fine, but small children? That is just fueling the fantasies of pedophiles and child molesters the world over.

Couldn't agree more. I forking hate when they dress kids up like hookers, or give them hooker makeup. It makes my blood boil.

Agree 100% with GR, for stage / TV yes fine. For some medical conditions where their skin condition is causing them psychological problems OK. However for all non-medical cosmetic reasons absolutely not allowed as far as I'm concerned.

No, kids should be allowed to be kids.

(note: I generally also find it difficult to understand that grown ups wear make-up, especially in China where the make-up factories probably haven't even bothered to try their product on animals before putting it in the market)

GuilinRaf is spot on. No doubt about it. So are Scan and Hugh. My wife is 22 and doesn't wear makeup, and most of her friends don't either.

Look at it from this perspective if you still think it's okay: The only girls I've seen wearing makeup in China were call girls, or girls who go to clubs, especially expat hangouts, to engage in... fornicational endeavors. That's what my wife said as well. Admittedly, I don't hang around the big cities very often, so I don't know if this holds true for them as well.

Why the puck would you want a little girl dressing like those girls? If you still think it's okay, there's something wrong with you. Like Scamdiverian said, kids should be allowed to be kids. Don't take that from them.

Yeah, I get it. In America, girls wear makeup all the time. Little girls shouldn't. The whole point of makeup -- for most people, and in most people's eyes -- is to make yourself attractive to others.

Glad I am not the only one.  It makes my blood boil, as it has done today which is why I posted the question.  I wanted to check it wasn't just me.

Even the sodding beat dancers were wearing it, although they were at least about 14-16 years old.

Every school has been like it.  Even the kindergarten where the boss was foreign and specifically requested they didn't wear it.

Scandinavian:

If you want to take it up a notch from just blood boiling, you can google articles about the car show where they used little girls in bikinis because they were not allowed to have lightly dressed women at the show.

No, you're not the only one who is disturbed by this, I saw it years ago on the Spring Festival television celebrations; girls of fives and six tarted up in red lipstick and dressed like dancers. It infuriated me. I think it's a mistake made in both innocence and stupidity. Children being treated like dolls is a testimony to the sheer lack of maturity in the adults. I give the benefit of the doubt that those responsible are not aware of the symbolism involved in the application of lipstick.

I agree totally kids should be kids

I also agree that the parents are blissfully unaware of the symbolism as martian said.
