Q: Is it common for bosses to give hongbaos for employee's wedding?
One of my Chinese friends got married and received a hongbao from her boss, even though he personally didn't go to the wedding.
Is this an accepted (expected?) custom here, or purely to the discretion of the boss in question?

Well, it depends on the Boss and the size of the company.
Generally speaking, your immediate supervisor will be excepted to give yo u a hongbao. To not do so would mean a loss of face.
Now, it it is a company with thousands of employees, then no, the CEO wont give you one unless he/she knows you personally.
