Q: Is it common for children to send their parents to old folks homes here?

Or is this looked down upon in China？ How do people deal with their elderly parents who can't look after themselves anymore?

Children take care of their parents in China until the bitter end. The only people in old folks homes are people without children or their children have abandoned them for some reason.

Yeah it goes against traditional Chinese customs.

It is a law in China, and it is even included in their Constitution that children must take care of their elder parents at their old age. So, very seldom you see homes for retired persons as you see them abroad. Besides, elders do take care of children while the younger couple goes to work every day.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
