Q: Is it common for Chinese to get jobs without even a face to face interview?
One of my good friends was accepted for a junior position in one of the world's biggest consulting firms (the branch in Beijing) without even going for an interview. She knew a friend who worked there.
I'm happy for her, and I knew about the power of guanxi, but... damn. Not even a phone call, nothing. Everything done through that middleman friend. Kinda screwed up

That kind of thing is really common in China. I have even seen mid-level positions filled the same way. Normally, the companies protect themselves with the probation period, but it can also be used as an excuse to get rid of the person who did the recommending if the hired person doesn't work out.
