Q: Is it common for Chinese to kill pet dogs?

A Chinese family of 6 has been threatening to kill our two black mini Schnauzer when I was out of town.

My girlfriend opened her car door to put the leash on the dogs and one of them got away, wanting to go play with the little kid. Our dog is quite playful and sociable with children and would never attack anyone. She just thought the kid wanted to play too. He was running back and forth alone on the parking exit path, away from the supervision of his family. He fell down on the exit ramp while trying to run away after seeing the dog. The 6 members of the family then began throwing abuse towards my girlfriend while repeatedly kicking the dog. My girlfriend kept apologizing and offered to take them to the hospital to see if the kid had any injury, but they only replied with a tirade of swear words, they kept bullying her and continued to behave like primitive savages for about half an hour without trying to listen. One of the two Chinese guys threatened to slap her multiple times with his hand raised and kept pointing his finger in her face, which had me wondering if that is a acceptable thing to abuse women like this in China, especially because during all that time, other neighbors and a few male security guards gathered around and just kept watching the 6 people mobbing around one girl. None of the onlookers decided to step in.

While I understand that my girlfriend should have held the dog, isn't it still the responsibility of the 6 adults to be preventive with their kid's safety and not let him run around in a place as dangerous and unpredictable as a parking exit in the first place? What if there was a vehicle coming out while he was running alone in front of the exit? Would it have been the driver's turn to receive abuse from the parents then?

I also don't understand how is it so common to see Chinese men verbally and visually abuse women in public?

The 6 people have seen the toddler falling, they feared a lot for the toddler safety, and from there, they switched to berserk mode, all sanity and reason gone. Rather than just saying "be careful with your dog, you almost hurt our baby", you got what you got instead.

People going apeshit, overwhelmed by fear, emotion, insecurity. Mobs gathering to see, but not moving one finger to do something.

TIC : This Is China.

Anybody not familiar with your dog, can be scarred when animal is approaching.

Chinese are especially terrified of dogs, and other loose animals. My Chinese GF would make 10m circle around one small, 'battery powered' dog. Even, if I would approach larger dog, and pet the animal, she wouldn't dare to come closer.

And with kids, everything is just multiplied. Screaming, crying, and so on.

As pet owner, you're entirely responsible for acts of your pet. You shouldn't blame Chinese, IMO. They might have friend, who can cook your Schnauzer with (German) dumplings, after they're done.

I saw and stopped a guy from beating his wife in a parking lot a in 2010 while a group of neighbors sipped beers just watching as if it was a public entertainment. They were actually pissed at me for stepping in and stopping the one-side thrashing. The asshole actually broke her nose and not one person called the cops. That beating went on for at least 10 minutes before I got up to the crowd. If someone stuck a finger in my face I would surely snap it if a threat was attached to the body language. Chinese are notorious wife beaters.

Scandinavian:

see, had Chinese TV had more (or any) quality programming, people would not have to resort to entertainment such as wife-beating.

I am always cautious of dogs when it comes to my daughter.  Too many kids have been mauled in the UK over the years.

The smaller the dog, the more cautious I am.

Anyway, to the question. I have no doubt they do kill dogs.  But it probably won't be the Police.

In the UK, if your dog snaps at a kid, it's off to the vet it goes, escorted by the boys in blue.

Scandinavian:

Further than looking at the size of the dog, also look at the owner. If a man, the more likely you are to think "He looks like a great guy to have a beer with" the less likely the dog will bite. If the owner is a woman, if she is hot, the dog will most like bite, but hey, what a man doesn't do to get laid.

OK, this is bull, but the body language of the owner will say a lot about a dogs reaction pattern. If the dog walking in front of it's master, then the dog thinks it's the leader, which entails having responsibility for protecting the human.

To be honest, I'm not really a doggy person Scan.

Sure, I had one all my life till my mid twenties,  but I don't really go in for all this look at the owner stuff.

A dogs a dog. Even if I had one full time in the house I would be wary of it with my kid. Or at least I would be wary of my kid with the dog .

Our present dog I wouldn't trust to be alone with a kid, but the Labradors I've had earlier, no problemo.
