A true mugging, no.  Theifs here are less confrontational and will be more pickpockets than muggers.

Also (especially outside of tourist areas) local thiefs will be less likely to want to target foreigners.  The idea that being caught messing with a foreigner will make China look bad and if you make China look bad, you don't get a second chance.

crimochina:

not true, many target foreigners others avoid foreigners out of fear of getting their ass kicked. the majority dont care who they target. i know many foreigners who have been pickpocketed in touristy areas. and a few guys who were mugged in their hotel rooms. (but they were staying in unapproved hotels)

That's not likely to happen in the streets of China with the amount of people that occupy those streets. There are too many people on the streets of China for a mugging to occur.

I agree with Daben also that pickpocket thieves are the most common crimes that you will see being committed in China. If you have a wallet or a key it will be best to put it somewhere that will not be easily accesible to the thieves.

nevermind:

There are TONS of muggings in China all the time. Especially late at night. Rapes too.

I know MANY people who have been mugged here, two last week alone. Depends where you are. In Beijing San Li Tun is going through a spate of them right now. I hear Wudaoku is as well. This city is far more dangerous than people think.

mattaya:

I have heard of those but wasn't sure if it was rumor or real. I have been to San Li Tun recently and nothing real suspicious going on unless you call people on the street standing outside of the Apple Store trying to sell an Iphone 4s suspicious. Do you think those muggings were because they knew people were getting the Iphone 4s phones?

Sanlitun was always home for rape, fights, thievery and drug deals. It's just that since they opened the Village, more and more people came every year, pouring more oil in the fire, and reporting the stories more often.

It's because they expect drunks with money on them being an easy target.

Most thieves here are spineless unless they're in a big group. What you have to worry about is pickpockets. Teacher at my school was buying some stuff and at a 711 and a thief took his wallet, stole all the money, and put the wallet back in his pocket without the teacher even realizing it. Always be on guard for pettiness.

It's very unlikely. Been here for 5 years and I believe it's safe to live here.

PS
I have experience living in these cities- Wuhan, Guangzhou, Wuxi and Shanghai yes

Xpat.John:

Is Wuhan the worst city you have lived in? I have been here off and on for almost 2 years and I can't stand the city. Guangzhou is so much nicer. :)

Can't say a lot about Wuhan since we only lived there for 4 months. But definitely the least safest place we lived in China. I say that cause one rainy night while walking down Zhongshan St. we saw a man pickpocketing a lady then there was another time we realized somebody was like following us (must be a pickpocket or something) until my husband gave him the signal that we are actually aware of him. Like you, we also like Guangzhou :-)

Haha.......
if you don't wanna get ripped of, avoid China, it seems people don’t know what happens in China. People confuse 'safe' and 'crime'. Foreigners get robbed every day in China, not "always" at knife point (except in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, GuangDong, and Changchun, west China regions, etc.....haha!). The western style of crime uses a stronger violence to "do" the crime. But tourists getting robbed at tea houses or the taxi scams etc..all the time. People here are idiots, if they believe those girls are really students or that tea houses really come that expensive. Anybody who's not a complete idiot will not believe this, even balding guys with beer bellys know, the only interest those girls have is their wallet.

Western people are just plain stupid, they get robbed every time they buy a dvd, a satellite receiver, pay rent, buy a fake shirt, tip in a restaurant, or pay full price in a store even there is a 40% off sale going on. China has been practicing crime for 5000 years, in other countries it's only been 2000 years and there is a bit more violence associated with it. Western brainwashing has made you lose your vision when it comes to the grit of the real world. In China it is a greater offense to have a person know they are being robbed then being cleverly pickpocket. It was a big issue in 2007 when people in Guangzhou started using motorcycles to grab purses and take off.

Are you never been scammed, mugged or had anything stolen here?

Jnusb416:

So, benny, Western people are stupid? So that means that you are stupid too? Or are you admitting that you're not Western?

hahaahh............. you really want to know huh? Try doing more your best, maybe you can figure it out. But my point remains the same, in this forum there are a bunch of idiots that do everything but help others (which I thought was the purpose of it, no matter what ethic they are). You can see it in any post of a newbie asking for help. I'm not saying that i give good advise, but if it is a serious question............

Western people are stupid? Yeah, then why do we own and run everything? Westerners get ripped off here at stores because they frankly don't want a half an hour hassle to save what is a pittance to us, because we're civilized.

Benny, you're an idiot. I'm already way further ahead in life than you will ever be, both at home and here. No, I don't teach English, yes I have a proper well paying job here, speak two languages fluently and working on my third here in China. Married, baby on the way, and close to getting a new job back home in the civilized world that will pay a decent wage for me and my family. Enjoy your 5,000 kuai a month, kiddo. ANd keep thinking the way you do, we'll see how far YOU get.

Lets meet BIGmind, anytime, any place. you can tell. Just hurry up and don't waste black ink here. "a" is standing for "alligator" you do know that, do you? Big mouth, short arms, never can reach in the pocket. Think about this. Do you think skin colour or nationality means anything? It does, but only to the ignorant. Be smart and don't keep embarrasing yourself!

I had a guy stick his hand in my pocket, but when I turned I could see a cop standing there looking at me, so I didn't drop the guy. I figured the cop would come after me.
Another time a bunch of guys with shaved heads came and were running around on the ground like a bunch of chimps. I figured they were going to try to pick my pocket. I gave them an evil look, and would have kicked one in the head if he got close enough, they just took off.
And I was one of those guys that walked around drinking beer, but never drunk. I walked in areas that were really run down sometimes. I wasn't ever worried, but a beer bottle does make a handy weapon if you need one.

a lot of what theives do is they intimidate. here , locals are easily intimidated so theives dont need to pull out a weapon. what Ted described is common. i often have seen them run into shops and everyone ignored them out of fear. they picked everyones pockets except mine and the friend i was with because i stepped to them when they tried. it was weird he saw me looking right at him while he tried to go in my friends purse and she was looking right in the mirror i think she was lieing when she said she didnt see him. i bumped into him with my chest and stared him down then he ran to his friends giggling like little school girls. its silly people are afraid of them?? people in this country are such cowards. they will risk their life to catch a bus but not to protect their property

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
