Q: Is it common to have probation pay cuts for teaching jobs?

Was offered a job at a school and they have a 3 month probation pay cut, about 20% of total salary. I was wondering if that was usual or not

To be honest, I have never heard of that.  Is this with a training school, university?

It's not in the official contract...it's added. Not too common.

Hmmm. Never heard of that one at public schools, however, I have heard of private schools trying to do that.

One private "learning center" also said they would dock pay if a teacher was late, or if teaching materials were not returned at the lessons end. All in all, just another way to soak teachers for money.

It's common in my experience but 3 months sounds long and 20% sounds high. Time to negotiate.

This is the norm for Chinese workers at my factory, but the probationary period is only one month, although I think the percentage salary withheld may be more....

I definitely wouldn't just accept it as is, recommend you negotiate or find another place to work, as this kind of policy should serve as an insight into their general practice of trying to BEND YOU OVER...

Also in my company we have probation period of 3 months with a 15% salary reduction, it's the common norm here.

I had that in my contract; the company turned out to be completely shit. Be very careful with any contract you sign.

Chinese employees consider contract as  the bamboo sold in the grocery shop. They keep cutting till you get the same salary of your Chinese mates. They might tell you we don't need like you after you finish your probation. In this way they can get low budget teachers consistently . I would ignore them if I were you.

There are too, too, too many jobs out there in the PRC to sit for this kind of thing in a contract; some schools try to get away with it and some foreign teachers allow the schools to get away with it. Under no circumstances accept this kind of a contract.

3 months is too long

20% is too high

something smells off at that school

or its just another way to fool a foreigner (laowi hao pian) and that will continue won't it?

At Web private school I had 1,000rmb from 9,000 (11%) less and only 2 months

The contract should be clear about it, otherwise you can be sure that someone is likely trying to take advantage of you and put some money in their pocket, whether it is the agent, the HR or else.

contracts may have a 1 month probation. my boss mistreated a co-worker by extending the reduced-pay period to 3 months. Then she left. As should you, if it isn't in the contract you signed. beware of pay reduction based on "perceptions of performance quality". Use the Chinese saying "how bad is bad?" and they'll understand your concerns. If they still bullshit you, you leave immediately. Be stern, and never raise your voice.

JacobJohn:

great adivce about the "how bad is bad" issue. Thanks!
