My older brother just returned to university and it kinda got me thinking about whether or not this was at all common in China, for people to stop working for a year, or to do night classes at university later in their lives.

Form my understanding, there is an age limit;25 for undergrad, 35 for masters/Ph.D.
no it's actually very uncommon. Chinese has a saying 人过三十不学艺 which means people can't learn any skills after they pass thirty years old . it's obviously wrong but that's how people say it . the communist party officials are required to study in their socialism schools sometimes but who the hell knows what they do there .
