Q: Is it common not to have central heating in apartment?

I arrived two weeks ago in beijing and just rented my flat here. I was warned by the agent that there wasn't any central heating here, and that instead I had radiators which I had to manually turn on or off.

Is it common not to have central heating? The agent said it would cost me 100 RMB a month if I turned the 3 radiators on. Did I get gypped or is that an accurate estimate?

Dear Ano:

I think you have been ripped off.  Northern China most of the homes, apartments and buildings have central heat. Even some of my friends who live in one room apartments (bed, cooking equipment, are in the same room, communal bathroom) have central heating.

May I ask how much are you paying in rent?

Im in northern China and it gets freezing in winter up to -20 where i am.  Apartments here have under floor heating which gets turned on around November time automatically and you cant turn it of and  they normally put on over night time- work colleagues apartment reaches 31.c at night time and he has to have the window open lol-.  I did visit a friends apartment which was a very old build and did not have this under floor heating and with its radiators its still freezing in there at night and he said about the same figure for his 1 portable radiator and this is not Bejing though as may be more.

If you only signed for 6 months i would look for somewhere else as you have to wrap up warm in your apartment come winter.

the answer is yes. but my questions is why you need the heater now? it's spring-summer time! plus if you rent the apartment with central heating through winter, it will be the onwerwn responsibility to pay that fee.

Yes, central heating is mostly known to be in a business, but for the most part you have wall mounted AC's and floor heating. Not to bad though, saves electricity and my floor heating rocks.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
