Q: Is it cool to be racist?
I was having class and the article we were reading was about racism. After going through it, I wanted to start a discussion. I asked them what they thought about racism. One dumbass said that he liked racism, that it was a good thing, and I think he thought that made him sound cool.
A week earlier a guy mentioned in class Hitler in a good way. I asked him if he liked him and he said yes, he was a good leader. The other girl didnt agree, but even after reminding him that Hitler killed millions and would have happily killed asians when he got around to it, he still held his ground that he was good.
Have any of you heard anything like this for students or coworkers?
Some racist jokes are cool, so long as that's what they're taken for -- it's not nice to accidentally offend someone in jest. However, if this kind of idiocy is your normal way of seeing the world just doesn't communicate with me at all. I've refused employing a person before because (he said): 'Yes, Hitler may have went a bit too far. I'd have enslaved the Jews instead of killing them. It would have been much better for the economy'. When I told why he wasn't getting the job, he seemed really confused as to why the whole Hitler thing wasn't a good topic in the first place.

Wow, that gives me the creeps. I also have a student who claims to like Hitler, and it also gives me the creeps. I would give a thumbs up, but that seems like thumbs-upping Hitler in some way...

I had a student whose name was "Adolf". When I asked why he chose his name and he said Hitler, I was no longer able to call him that. I changed it to "Adolfo".
Much to my pleasant surprise, he likes that name more, says it sounds "romantic" so that is his new "English" name.
I am not usually comfortable with racial jokes. Way too often they indicate a lack of empathy and or respect. Maybe even hatred.
I belonged to a Hispanic-Latino group when I was in college and the hypocrisy I observed revolted me. They would claim "racism" or "genocide" if a white person made a racial joke, yet they continually made anti-white jokes themselves. I once pointed this out in a meeting and was booed offstage. I renounced my membership the next day.
I did forget myself briefly last year, and boy, did I pay the price!
If you do tell one, make sure it is not offensive or pick your audience carefully.
What I usually to is substitute said race for myself. Usually, it "translates" quite well and people tend to appreciate self effacing humor, if done in moderation.
Is it gay to be a space cowboy in a monkey suit? Yeah so racism isn't cool bro!
racism started way before Christ, black people wasn't consider as human but animal.and in the 80's in US. Slavery by the French and England.i am just happy that its no long as stronge as it was before.atless in country outside China. still in Chinese university or outside in there zoo. they live like animal of selfishness or hanger for money. again we can find few good one!!!!!!!!

See. At first I thought you meant 1880. I don't think any black people were thought of as animals in the United States in 1980, at least not by any intelligent thinking people. Now, reading the rest of the post, I'm not sure what you meant...
