Q: Is it currently very difficult to get a work visa if you want to work in China as a teacher?

Is it presently very difficult to get a work visa if you come from an European country and you want to work in China as a German teacher?

From what I'm hearing it's pretty much impossible. The borders are closed.

China “Accidentally” uses Anal Swab tests on US Diplomats

Are you ready for this week’s absurdity? Here’s our Friday roll-up of the most ridiculous stories from around the world that are threats to your liberty, risks to your prosperity… and on occasion, inspiring poetic justice.

In January we mentioned that China began using anal swab Covid tests on school children, claiming they were more accurate than the nasal swab method.

angel China also requires the intrusive (by about 2-3 inches) tests on certain travelers coming into the country.

Recently, a group of US diplomats and their family members reported that they were subjected to the anal swabs.

In response, China at first claimed that the tests were given in error. But later they backtracked and denied that they had ever required anal swabs for US diplomats.

But the diplomats weren’t aren’t dropping the issue, and they’ve appealed to the US State Department— which has already said it is committed to preserving the “dignity” of US diplomats and their families.

angel Wonderful! So we can all agree that the test is totally undignified. But if that’s the case, why is “dignity” only reserved for government officials?

Sounds like this is another case of rules for thee, and not for me.

If you can find a way into China, and you can legally get a work visa, then the opportunities are boundless. In fact, salaries are going up as a result of the foreign teacher shortage. You can see perhaps an extra 3000-5000 rmb in some places. As for teaching German in China, I have only seen one job posting for a German teacher in the echinacities site these past few months.

At this point I would say it's all but impossible to get a work visa. I've spoken with several foreign recruiters and they are not optimistic that China will reopen anytime this year. Now the Chinese goverment is requiring all foreigners to get an anal swab. It's clear that this is about more than just Covid. I'm looking for opportunities in Southeast Asia now.
