How easy is it to find private students in Shanghai? What is a good hourly rate to ask?
Forgetting about needing a visa, is it possible to make enough money to live on just from private lessons?

Shanghai is an extremely competitive market for private students. You might trying putting up notices in Carrefour, RT-Mart, Walmart (if they have bulletin boards in Shanghai and that I can't guarantee); additionally, you might try leaving a notice here, on the China Daily forums, etc., etc. Generally privates come through word-of-mouth and good relations. Since you don't mention anything about your background, training, qualifications, it is really hard to say what your salary might be -- perhaps RMB 150 - RMB 200 per hour. Shanghai privates are not always steady and not always dependable.
Next, "forgetting about the visa", well, that's just not a good idea, not these days in any case.
