Q: Is it just me or are media reports of murders/violence really grotesque here?
Every time I check out the news sites and click on a story of a murder/similar violence there's almost always a nasty aftermath photo of the dead body of the victim or whatever, it's pretty graphic. Back home they'd usually censor that kind of stuff though I'm wondering if China has lax laws on showing potentially sensitive imagery? I think its quite strange given their iron fist-like regulations of porn etc. One of the things that surprised me was when I got an inner city bus for the first time here- the TV was showing an incredibly violent gangster movie and kids were glued to it. Are people desensitize to violence here more than back home?
First off porn is not murder...it's actually the complete opposite. Murder is made to gross you out while porn is supposed to make you happy.
Also, I have seen where they had photos of the murdered victims. Usually a person laying on the floor with blood spilled out on the floor. If you call that graphic you must have never seen an mma fight!

@Scandinavian Funny you mention that - Silva's style of inane rambling is something my dad used to refer to as "diarrhea of the mouth". Then again, he'd also say people like him "couldn't pour piss out of a cowboy boot with directions on the heel". He had a lot of colorful phrases...

A woman lying in bed with her (7-month) aborted fetus is uncensored*, but the Statue of David's rather small penis is pixilated.
I don't think the government is especially concerned about shocking violence, or the effect it will have on the young and impressionable. They are much more preoccupied with "protecting" the public from any references to Taiwan, Tibet, Democracy, China's history, etc..
*: I'm actually in favour of brutal and confronting images like this one, because they expose the dark underbelly of China, and are rather difficult to dismiss or ignore.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen on a Chinese news website were the photos from some prostitution bust where even the guy's nipples were pixilated.

If you go back some months. There was a school tragedy in the US and on in China at the same time. The one in the US got media coverage, the one in China almost no mention. Why? Officially to prevent copycats from repeating the crime. This makes little sense as the US tragedy was openly covered. There is no logic behind censoring in China.
I think China reports such atrocities in USA because they (the CPC) like to try and portray the USA in a poor light. For the converse reason they don't usually give much coverage to similar atrocities in China.
I honestly have no idea. I do not have terrestrial television in my home and I never will. I don't trust it here or at home; I believe it to be one of the most powerful tools of any government.
I find it confronting and I do not want my Kids to see it
so I find myself watching the News away from them if they are home

I do not need to see the Gory stuff to understand the gravity of the situation
But I understand other people do
however I would like a warning just before it comes on
