Q: Is it legal for my employer to compel me to do that following?

Every saturday my employer required me to work from 8am to 4:30 pm which is 8 and a half hours.  I understand that as my contract says nothing about demo classes that my employer cannot compel me to perform them.Is my employer able to compel me to work more than 8 hours or complete tasks not explicitly mentioned on my contract?

what does your contract say.... many are ambiguous and in the favor of the company.

However, I believe the work week is 44 hours... they can make you work 44 hours over 6 days in accordance with the chinese labor laws.

You already know the answer. Check out your contract, you have to do everything listed there and nothing more.

Most schools here give two days off unless there is an arrangement made between you and the school to be paid extra for working on one of your off days. Check you contract again but at the end of the day it's a matter of if you don't like your job then quit.

I think you should seek the counsel of a lawyer. In my country the contract cannot contradict the Labor legislation, so if something is not in the contact it does not mean the employer can ask whatever he or she wants, it means that you should go by the Labor legislation. I don't know how it is in your country. So a lawyer will help, I suppose.

Likewise additionally to the lawyer's consultation you should check the Labor laws yourself. It will never bring you any harm.

OMG! lol! I'm sure an esl teacher has a lawyer on retainer who is ready to jump into court for the most trivial of matters. In my experience a bit of give and take wins you more than an unwinnable legal fight.

If you don't have a work visa, then it is perfectly ok for your employer to ask (compel) you to do whatever he  pleases. The employer might get fined. You will never know for sure. The government will find out that you don't have the qualifications (they will find a story to make that up) and extradite you after taking whatever money you have. China's labor laws apply only to Chinese citizens.

Did you forget the 2 hour nanny nap?

You really have to be a little flexible. There is probably a scheduling reason for the extra 30 mins, or where you intending to walk out of a class a half an hour early?

My employer has tried compelling his staff to do many things. He gets foreigners here, promises them money and good titles. Then, he says he can't do their visas and make them work on tourist/business visas. He took the Aston books from his Aston school in Xilinhot, Inner Mongolia, made cheap copies under his new brand name Intelligent English, and opened his own school in Xiwuqi, Inner Mongolia. He forces his employees to work 7 days a week, keeps them hostage by not giving them their documents, and threatens anyone who tries to leave.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
