Q: Is it me or do people here love to chat away whilst on the toilet?

Apologies for the image on a Thursday morning, but it's something I've noticed in my office block over the past few weeks and also in public toilets too. People in cubicles seem to love to strike up a conversation with each others whilst they're dong their business. Seems strange to me. Beijing's hutong area is also full of publc toilets that don't have much privacy and out a whole new spin on the term community - walk in one of them and you're likely to get a lovely view. Do you think that's why they talk whilst on the bog?

Nope it's not just you.  Chiense people concept of the bathroom being a private and personal space issue is non existent.

From talking while going,  to not having stalls, to not closing the door, and to going to the bathroom out on the sidewalks and in public.  China just simply has no idea that the bathroom is and should be a pirvate and personal matter.

GuilinRaf:

Even when you do have a bathroom, like in the university, you can see the urinals from the hallway.

Haha it's so true. I always wonder why people go to the bathroom and make phone calls whilst peeing. I also wonder if the person on the other end of the line can here the peeing or flushing noises. They're usually quite loud. It's bizarre!

Yes many times i have seen someone taking a crap, door wide open, and his mate leant against the door frame having a nice old chat.

Honestly don't believe it, and will never get used to that.

Pro tip: if you're in the middle of going number two and someone goes in the stall next to you and starts talking on the phone, fart as loudly (and disgustingly) as you can. It's kind of hilarious.

At work I hear people making business calls,  whist doing their business.

No wonder so many businesses in China end up going down the pan.

A:Good question!  I'd say, if you study at Uni in China beside working full-time as an E.T. with Residence permit, you don't interfere with your full-time employment. It's your free time and you can do anything you want, with respect to the Chinese laws and customs. Have a look at terms of Z visa/Residence permit and ... ".. you cannot work (and earn monies!) with another employer ..."That's all it is! Your RP sponsor title is written on the RP stamp in your passport, I think. It's in Mandarin, so I've heard about that from someone ...At I.D.-ing by cops, they know where you work and than more details about you are just a phone call away ... and it happened in person ... LOL ... during the day-time stroll through Wulumuqi, Xinjiang, 2012/13 semester. Now under RP, you're free to surf Internet, jog, ... and study, too. I suggest, you look and ask at the Uni, you plan to study in the future. Have a detailed look at requirements for studying and attending chosen Uni.Good luck! -- icnif77
