Q: Is it normal to not have a letterbox in China?
I don't have a letterbox for my apartment. How do I get mail you may ask? I don't. I've never gotten any mail while in China. Actually there is a communal letterbox downstairs in my building but my landlord won't give me the key. Is this normal?
my 'letterbox' was under a bridge beside the main road next to my school where people collected their post. Of course I wasn't told about this. there were letters and packages sent to me that arrived at the office in my school, but they always 'forgot' to tell me about them until weeks later, or if I asked.

Yes, i laughed too when i was told that everyone went to the nearby underpass to collect their post. It could be a lucky-dip when it came to parcels. An american colleague told me how he got a box of rocks when he was expecting some food items from home.
We have a normal letterbox, or that is all letterboxes are next to each other in the basement lobby of the building.
Don't worry about it, all we get ever is from China Mobile about how much data I use on this site.
The fact that your landlord doesn't hand out the key, well, that is probably just because he has not bothered making sure he is not getting mail there himself and he doesn't want you to have access to his dirty laundry.
Have you considered trying to send yourself a letter to see what happens?
We have letter boxes in my apartment complex, but like you guys the landlord didn't give the key. Usually the mail that gets sent goes straight to our office...

See this is a thing I do not get about China. It is convenient to get mail at your office, but this shows there is no separation between work and private life. Your employer/landlord owns you.

think of it as community service
Most Chinese don't use mail box either. I stopped writing letters about 15 years ago. It's slow, unefficient.
