Q: Is it normal for someone to ask you a copy of your passport for an interview?

It's just that I've been to interviews for teaching english but am not WHITE... Well some people asked me to send them a copy of my passport... Am willing to show them but not mail them a copy... It's quite private and important to me. Anyone with the same problem...???

for any job applications here, i have been asked to email a copy of the picture page of my passport. And yes, it probably was to check my ethnicity.

Thanks sorrel, since am not white and need of the job am sure to be rejected as soon as I send them a copy of my passport... Some people didn't even call back or answered my mail. If there's one thing I don't like abt china it's the way they treat us non white people ;-( even though we may qualified for a job...

Yes, it is fine. They need to know your nationality and make sure you are not lying. Besides, they will need this for your working visa application process.

It's sad that in this time and age China still practices every type of discrimination known to man. Age, gender, race, disability you name it. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll find something. I would advise that you just send them your passport. If you don't, they'll only reject you later at Skype interview or worse, once you've made the trip to the school. Are you from one the big 5?

As a safeguard (ID theft in China is rampant) I block out my passport number and a part of the date of birth during the application process, basically anything to prevent ID theft. Only once an offer is made, will I send over the original scan. I also watermark all my qualification copies with the text (for application purposes only) to prevent anybody photo shopping them and selling them on.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
