Q: Is it normal for teachers to hit students in China ?

I work at a 'mill' training school ( first job in China ) where the teaching assistants sometimes physically hit kids about the body if they misbehave. I hate it and feel like I'm partly responsible because I lead the class. I've asked them not to do this many times. I prefer positive reinforcement. Is this something that happens in mainstream schools ?

I have worked in public schools for over five years. Yes, it is normal. Is it against the rules? Yes, but they still do it.

Was this the kindergarten teacher? The one who got caught because she shared the photos with the kids parents.

I don't have a kid but soon will, my only experience with education is raising a cat. Violence doesn't work with felines. What works is, every time he does something wrong, I'll force him to watch the place where the problem occurred, then listen to me speaking about stuff in an angry way for minutes. I know he doesn't get language, so I just think aloud about something else.

The result is: well, cats never fucking learn about anything, but at least he watches twice before fucking around in my presence, which is good enough.

Don't hit kids, just have them correct their wrongs, by force. Or assimilate a wrongdoing to long and boring minutes of retrospection. It's much much better than sheer violence. If I were a teacher, this would mean for example a ticket straight to the board either to do exercises related to the class or just to have an explanation in English before the class. Something semi-embarrassing (in a positive way) that's long enough so it won't be worth to risk it in the future.

I would say, look how someone cares for a pet, it will give you an idea of how that person will deal with kids.

It is normal. I have even seen pulling the ears and sin pointing sticks to ht. I never do any of it.  I let the Chinese teachers do it.

Chinese have a lot of issues with parenting. They don't really know of any other way to punish their children other than just hitting them. They even encourage the child to hit others and animals... which is why lots of cats and small dogs dread small children.

The schools that TRULY aren't a allowed to hit the children (IE children of rich people)... will most likely humiliate them and tell them how they waste their parent's money etc.

They don't know any better if they were raised in a village. It goes along with the other laundry list of ill-manners they present in public...

Lord_hanson:

yup, yesterday I saw some kids kicking a dog. A parent then came up and kicked the dog too. One of those kids will kick the wrong dog and be viciously attacked, maybe killed by a dog. I don't understand why the adult would encourage te children to provoke an animal with sharp teeth.

Unfortunately, it is part of the "culture". I find it very sad... as I love animals and helping people to rise above their situations.... but in China...

They only rise by looking down and abusing others. The victims must take the punishment as that is part of the Chinese social structure. If you are poor or weak, you must understand your place.

It's sick, as weakness and poverty is an illusion that can mask supreme potential. Many farmers/lower-class turned into some of the most reknown (good or bad) leaders of history. Who?

It does happen everywhere, in both public and private education. I have been here for 8 years, taught for 6, saw the most horrible and inhumane ways to punish children. There is no way I will send my kids to school in China.

The only exceptions are the sons and daughters of rich and influent people, because the teachers would rather become the old man's mistresses for 5000 RMB per month.

I once had a student say to me: 'I used to hate math. I was very bad at it. Then, my teacher hit me, and I liked math!'

`I think its disgusting the way some Chinese teachers treat the children at the kindergarten.

I was teaching my k3 class this morning and one of the teachers roughed up one of the children and to make it worse he is special needs child.

The teachers have no patience.I have also seen kids get dragged across the floor and hit with rulers and we have cameras in the class room.

I feel a teacher has no right to hit other peoples children.

There's so many things you can do with special needs kids. You can make the child your helper bringing he or she up to the desk with you. Praise the child for the littlest thing like sweeping the classroom.

I don't know how I'd react in that situation. I'd say something for sure but my gut reaction would be to do the same to the TA....which would then lose me the job. Difficult situation.

My personal experience has been that this type of punishment is not tolerated nearly as much as the commentors make it seem. Does it happen? Yes. But, I have seen children come to school with bruises from their parents. The schools call the police to investigate. I saw one parent taken away in cuffs as a result. I have also heard of two teachers sacked from their jobs as a result of abuse in my school. And, when I first arrived in China, I saw a teacher pulling ears and lightly kicking a boy in the legs. As I was new in China, I kept telling myself that this is their culture and their rules...not mine. I did stay and watch so it did not get out of hand. And, I made sure the teacher was aware of my gaze. Since that day, I have told myself that I will defend these kids from such abuse whenever I see it....regardless of the cost to me. Luckily, I have not had to exercise that decision since that day.

Shocking.

Scotland followed Scandanavias lead a few years ago and baned smacking of all sorts. Smack a kid and you get arrested.

Our daugher is almost 3 and she has had the back of her hand slapped once. She was pouring water on an electrical appliance. I reacted bably after a long tiring day of terrible twos. That once was once too much. I feel deep shame over it. never never again.

When I was at school corporal punishment was still used. It was off to the headmaster who administered "the strap".

Totally wrong.

Lord_hanson:

I think slapping her hand ia nothing to worry about, it is better than getting an electric shock.

i once was tutoring a 6 year old and the tigermom came in a slapped him for not paying attention, it was a part time non contract gig, so i just got up and walked out, i told the school this was illegal and she could hit the kid at home but not in front of me, when they begged me to go back and offered more money, i simply stated fine, she puts in writing that if she strikes the kid in front of me, i have permission to hit her the same way without being prosecuted,

of course she went into a rage like a lunatic and threatened me, but when i took off my shirt so she could see the scars and bullet holes, the room got quiet suddenly, bring the whole family down here, today is a good day to die and tomorrow will be even better.
