Q: Is it odd that the cars drive with hi-beams on and e-bikes drive with no lights?

where I live the cars drive with those modern hi-beams which are sooooo bright and the e-bikes whiz around on any navigable surface in any direction with no lights. I hate to be a killjoy, but those e-bikes are so dangerous- we have so many children and old people walking around here, this is a gated community and the roads are used as pedestrian-ways as well. (Yes, there are some sidewalks, the e-bikes go on them all the time)

This city actually tried outlawing e-bikes. It was about as effective as the no-smoking ordinance.

Why many here drive with the high beams on ?.  For the same reason that they do as they please while driving, a combination of lack of proper law enforcement and total disregard for the rest of the driving population.

And why ebikers do not use lights while driving at night ?.  Even if ebikes are fitted with good front, side and rear lights, it is a question of battery usage and life.  Driving without lights allows them a few extra miles for each battery charge, and who cares about the rest of the driving or walking population ?.  Likde driving ebikes on sidewalks, or running red lights on ebikes.

It is also like the usage of the windshield wipers when rainning.  No one turns them on.  It is on and off inmediately, so blades last longer.

I wonder where the horn and emergency break at traffic lights fits into this ??????? wink

if there are cars every where with lights on then and you ride your bike where the cars are you do not need to turn on your light. i never need lights at night becaues i have good eye sight, there is a car every ten secounds.

xinyuren:

You think the lights are only for your sake? Typical Chinese thinking. Failing to think about others. Your lights are not only for safe driving but also for pedestrians to see you, since e-bikes are silent. And you are not safe at night without lights under any circumstances, regardless of what reason you give. But this is China, land of the ignorant.

@Jilu.he: If you can't afford the lights, you shouldn't be driving at night. There is a price and responsiblity to driving a vehicle that the Chinese just don't understand. And then when they are liable for damages or someone's life, they quickly run away. Does this seem archaic to anyone besides me?  It's almost like someone gave them technology before they were ready to handle it.  Maturity!  That's it.  They lack maturity,.

Another reason for using the high beams excessively is because some cities/towns will turn off the street lights at night.  I guess this is to save the city a little money on their electric bill?  Anyways...without the street lights, some parts of town are PITCH BLACK DARK.  I know which parts of town I need to use my high beams when driving at night...

But this reason for high beam usage is definitely second in line behind "i only care if I can see...f*** the rest".
