Haha, ok, i'm approaching 'General' myself. Exciting times, eh? I'm on 963. Race ya!

Anyway, to answer your question, 'Is it famous (?) to have a tattoo in China?' Do you mean 'popular'? I don't know, not really I don't think. But i've got five tattoos and I got three of them in China. One of them i'm trying to have removed at the moment. Never get tats on your hands; people see them and think 'prison time'.

the girls that have tattoos are either prostitutes or are pretty open.  I'm guessing that will get some thumbs down, but feel free to ask a chinese person about it.  As for the guy above, well, the girls in bars arent exactly traditional are they.

Hugh.G.Rection:

I think I'll pass on asking the Chinese that question especially as two of my Chinese female students have tattoos.

It depends. I have a tattoo on my left triceps, so I can wear t-shirts without it showing.  My last GF did not like it at all.  Those who have seen it, at least in Guilin, they by and large hated it. In Beijing, most did not really care for it, but were more tolerant than in Guilin.  As a general rule of thumb, younger people from the city do not mind it or even like it, older people and those from the countryside hate it.

In fairness, my family back home does  not care for it at all nor do my few former colleagues who have seen it from back at the Justice Department care for it either

Very true. In fact, it was in Guilin that I got mine, back in 2006 a full year before I knew I would be living there!

University crowd for the most part either dont care or they think it is cool.

I did it for myself. I had wanted one since I was twelve and one day decided to get it. By then, I was a 40 year old man who no longer cared who would like it and who would not.

If and when you do get yours, do it for the right reasons, do it because it is what YOU want. This is one of the few times where being selfish is the right thing to be!

Oh, and shop around! Look at the work of different artists until you find one whose work you like!

Yes. Snare drums are a traditional accompaniment to Scottish bagpipes, particularly in marching bands and competitions. I've heard that Hong Kong even has a Scottish game during the summer, although I cannot confirm it. However, I think tattoos could catch on here in the mainland.

For Chinese it is not popular. It is associated with the mafia to have tattoos.

I believe this has been asked and answered several times.

Yes I was surprised that tattoos are popular in China. i thought this was a western thing. I don't have one, but don't mind a nice one across the back of a woman. I saw them in Thailand also, maybe it's a global thing now.

Tattoos are often difficult to spot. I once went to a water park and was surprised about how many people had tattoos. However, the vast majority of them were men, with gigantic dragons over their backs, bellies and arms...Noticed many girls with flower motives. Usually guys with tattoos are considered bad or tough guys, whereas on girls it indicates that they are open or have a strong personality. Had some lesbian friends with tattoos and piercings too...

Hope not.  God, I'm sick of the "tramp stamp" back home.  It's not uniquely bad girl/bad boy anymore.  It's not even cool. It reminds me of the Dr. Seuss "Star Bellied Sneeches." Laser surgeons are hearing the sound of money.

In answer to your question, I actually put, "I do not have any tattoos," on my resume.
