To my understanding, holding hands is a step closer to be grabbed by the arms by their boyfriends when they want to dominate them emotionally and psychologically. It is aggresive, a violent cultural and character trait that is both seen as a prove a masculinity, instilling fear and love.
It is confusing an outcome of love, which Western people won't tolerate, let allone consider for a curtoisie. To the Chinese women that is an inherited apprehension of love coming from their malle counterpart, while to us it is a simple display of the "syndrom of Stocholm."
