Q: Is it possible to fix a laptop screen in China? How much should it cost?

Ok so I know this isn't directly related to China but I just want to get a feel about whether I can fix this issue or not.

Basically this morning, my laptop screen went dead. It  has been a bit jittery and blurry over the past few weeks, though often a soft shake would bring it back to normal. This morning it went completely black however, and yes I know I should have told thought about getting it repaired earlier but there you go.

The computer itself is fine, I can still hear it buzzing and whirring and when I turn it on it makes the Windows startup sound as usual, it's just the screen that is totally blank.

Is there something I can do about this? I'm in Beijing and we have an area called Zhongguancun where you can get computers fixed easy though I have no idea how much it should be, and am afraid of being screwed over. I don't really want to buy a whole new computer right now (I was hoping to wait till summer), though it's a bit frustrating as all my files/photos/writing (including a novel I had written over the past year) are in the hard drive, though I'm pretty certain they're safe.

By the way - laptop is a Packard Bell Easynote TJ74 (British made I think so probably no replacement parts in China)

Thanks in advance

Yeah, take it to your local "computer city" or "computer street".. Take a Chinese friend along to interpret and bargain for you.  In my experience, computer doctors in China will not charge an arm and a leg to fix your machine.

Example:  new keyboard for my laptop cost 200 RMB, labor included.  (White laptop, new keyboard generic black.  So what.  It works.)

Another example: Blue Screen of Death fix with OS purge and replace was 200 RMB.  In the States or Europe, multiple those figures by 10.

Finally, forget about spare parts.  They got 'em here.  They may be knock-offs and not Packard Bell, but they will fix your problemo in a jiffy.

BTW, your prob sounds like BSOD.  Easy fix.  But you may lose everything on your C drive.  Your D drive should remain intact, however.

Good luck.

Sounds like the graphics card

went through the same thing a couple of years back

forget it

you can try

hooking up top a monitor but if it is the card it will not work either

get somebody to send you a new laptop in the mail from back home

if you think this one has warranty send it home and get your stuff off the hard drive there

especially if you have banking details on it

otherwise make sure you destroy it completely

China does not have the best hackers by accident

It's possible. But try to to as much as you can by yourself (research).

I tried to get them to fix the smashed screen on my iphone once. I ended up paying 400rmb for them wrecking my phone even more.

the screen still doesn't work.

My laptop screen crapped out on me last year.

I bought an exterior monitor until I went home and had it fixed by Sony in Vancouver.

Unlike you....my issues were different...pixel distortions and it was the screen and not the hardware.

It sounds like you have a hardware issue so I would suggest you back up your data and re-boot windows.  If this does not work then take it in to a repair shop.

Even with fake parts if you find the right place in China then you can fix anything for dirt cheap....I fixed my IPhone last  year after a nasty drop and it cost me 280 rmb.

Thanks a lot for your help guys. I actually got it fixed yesterday. 1000 RMB (did I ripped off? probably). The screen was totally ruined and I needed to get it fixed straight away. Got the guy down from 1700 RMB.

Sidicas:

Depends on the screen and it depends on exactly what was replaced and whether or not the parts they used were official OEM parts or not...

If it was a full HD IPS Panel, you could expect to pay over $600 to have it replaced.  Even the cheapest TFT Panels are typically around $80 for just the panel+backlight and then $100 in labor on top of that.

If it was *just* an inverter board, they can be as cheap as $30, even for a certified OEM part,  but you'd again get hit with that $100 in labor, so it'd be $130.

Then you have to consider that if the laptop screen is more than 3-4 years old, then it's also a good idea to replace the backlight, inverter and screen together since they'll probably fail pretty soon anyway. For a low end display (<$1000 laptops) that would be about $150 + $100 labor and for higher end displays (ie: 17" laptops with IPS panels) it can be close to $600.

Disclaimer: All quotes above are in USD and what would be typically charged to people that get their laptops fixed at a computer shop in the USA.

It will probably cost you a lot. I went into the apple store and asked him how much it would be to fix something in my computer and it was too high. Trying to fix a screen should cost you a pretty penny! (Drunk!
