When I hear it, I reply: 'ni shr laowai!' (you are laowai).

I am not sure, if writting in pinjin is correct. That's what I say! Chinese always reply with laugh.

Kids in the Kindergarten taught me that. I told them: 'Security guard called me: 'laowai''. I showed them, who is security guard.

My apartment is no more than about five minutes' walk from my office. Every morning, I walk the gauntlet. Sniggering idiots saying "hellooooo" and "laowai" every two seconds. After work, I often head for my favourite "jiaozi" restaurant only to be confronted by about twenty or thirty kids that are no more than about nine or ten (some much younger) who come to stare, shout "waiguoren" then run away giggling. I used to take it all in my stride. But as the years have gone on, I have become less and less tolerant. What a race of people! (Oddly the nice people here are very nice, friendly and helpful. Why this enormous dichotomy?).

I never spent a day in China without being called a waiguoren, and I lived in Beijing, Wudaokou area.

The person you mentioned is either full of he-knows-what, or has never left an embassy compound.

How? I never left the house. laugh

Every fricken  day, I am called "Laowai" and "Waiguoren".  The school guards call me "wai jiao" and a couple of times I have been called "bai guizi".

In Guilin it was always "Laowai". Every day. All day.

In Beijing I am sometimes called "waiguo pengyou".

Maybe there is one district in all of China that does not do so, where people magically stop using that term?indecision

I have been in China for years and still get called 'lao wai' when I am not in  my

neighborhood. I find most Chinese people mean no harm when saying this

expression, it simply means 'foreigner'. In all my years here I discovered that

Chinese people like to state the obvious, such when seeing a foreigner they

automatically say 'lao wai'. They see me jogging and without fail I hear them

say 'ah, jogging'.

I remember when I first came to China, many Chinese would point at me

- even from some distance away - and yell 'ni kan, lao wai!.  However - and just

as in some other countries - being a foreigner still  elicits some rather crude

and insulting name calling by some locals to which I usually reply 'mud horse'

in Chinese language.

derek:

Yeah, they do tend to state the obvious don't they? Such as when my mother in law puts food on the table and says, without fail, "Derek, look, chicken wings." I find it somewhat silly. Do you suppose she believes that since I am a "laowai" that I don't know what chicken wings are?

I am pretty sure Coc is referring to me. I have said elsewhere I have lived in Nanning for 3 years and I have only ever been referred to as waigouren in my hearing once.

I can see why Coc is referred to as such so often; it is blatantly obvious to all but the culturally blind that he hates China, he hates the Chinese and is a racist. History is littered with those from minority backgrounds who viewed the emergence of those they perceived as their inferiors as a threat, usually they become racist. (Look at the American Irish in the period of the US emancipation of the slaves as an example).

If you live your life as a racist continually condemning those around you as inferior either in word or in action, can it really be surprising when they refer to you as foreign?

TBH I would call such people a lot worse!

But I don't worry, he reveals himself much more by these posts than I could ever hope for.

crimochina:

dude you really are on sth. so everyone who is called waiguoren, are called this because they hate china?

you are retarded. malcolmX rooted for and applauded the communist revolution. i always thought of what was happening in china was something great. a people for too long oppressed by others taking control over their own country for themselves. i had long admired chinese history and QingShihuang for uniting china. africa did not have that in their history and have suffered for it.

but after coming here and seeing that china went from being taken advantage of by outsiders to being victimized by their own govt i was ashamed. there is nothing worse than seeing a group of people being made to live like animals. shat , piss whereever you are. have every inch of your life controlled . people here can't even choose their own spouse. not only that but chinese culture was essentially destroyed.

my background actually helps me to understand what is happening here moreso than you which is why you work to protect what is happening here, and i am the voice of change, hoping that things improve here .

Hugh, I honestly don't see how you could've avoided the waiguoren/laowai thing unless you got some really bad hearing issues. I mean look at me... I'm profoundly deaf, but can still hear decently with hearing aids (provided there's not too much background noise), and I constantly hear stuff like this:

hurrrrloooooooooooooo

haaaalllllllloooooooooooh

hullllllllllooooooooooooo

waigguuoode!

waigguuuooorreennn a!!!!!!

laaaooowai!!!!

meiii guoo de?

niii maa dee bii (your mother's vag)

And I frequently deal with people who turn their friends around to face me in shock, "Oh my pucking buddha... Look! Waiguode..." I've seen this in every province and city, even in places where I really enjoyed China.  I've even been called the equivalent of the "n" word here (black devil; heiguizi) despite being white.

It doesn't bother me unless they're disrespectful about it, such as when they say "your mother's vag," or the "n" word. I understand many of them have never seen a foreigner before. I've also been to places where nobody said a thing or even cared that I was there. At least not to my face.

Honestly, being called a waiguoren/laowai isn't a big deal and is nothing to write home about. It's when they get disrespectful about it that it's a problem.

Keep in mind that I've visited more than a dozen provinces, around 90-100 cities from t3-t1, and even more countrysides. I've gotten the same thing every time.

Coc, rule number one when dealing with me.

I may post pissed, I may say stupid things, I may be mistaken or wrong but I NEVER lie!

So I will repeat this at 09:40 am totally sober; I live in Nanning Guangxi Province and have done so for 3 years, since Nov 2010 to be exact, and in all that time I have been called waigouren only once and that was by two young kids (I estimate at around 9 or 10 years old) and appeared more a surprised comment than a nasty one.

Now I have no way of proving this and tbh you are such a racist china hater you would just try and twist it even if I had the complete 3 years on video. So while I am flattered that you wrote a whole thread just about me, why don't you go away and count all the times you are called waigouren and feel superior about how YOU are being victimised by racists, I am sure that will make you feel better about your own racism.

Hulk,

I can only point you to my reply to Coc. As I said I have only heard this once and I am in no way deaf. (Ok my understanding of Chinese is limited but even so if it was said I would expect to hear it).

Also I have never not even once had strangers come up and try to talk to me (in English or Chinese) I have had people who know me by face speak, but I just view that as being friendly. I most certainly have never had anyone shout at me, (shout around me to others yes, at me no).

I have no idea why my experiences are so different from yours, perhaps if you look for bad things they will find you? Or perhaps it is because the dominant language of Nanning is Cantonese not Mandarin? Yes Mandarin is the official language but I estimate 90% speak either Cantonese (Guangdonghua) or the local dialect Baihua when out and about.

Samsara:

@Hugh

A foreigner having a low opinion of Chinese society does not cause people to say "laowai! laowai!"

When I first came to China I loved the attention, and loved Chinese people for pointing, staring and remarking at me. Now I feel somewhat more reserved about it (having detected the sinister and mocking undertones). My change in perception (from thinking positively to thinking negatively about the people in question) has made no difference to the number of people doing it.

In China there is a direct correlation between social status and white skin. People with dark skin are considered poorer, lower, and less desirable. This is objective reality for Chinese people.

China is a racist society, particularly towards black people. If you haven't noticed this in everyday reactions, the media and Chinese bureaucracy, you might be a bit dim.

At the beginning of this semester my university was trying to recruit another foreign teacher (a process which I assisted in because I didn't want to take on extra classes). After a lot of unsuccessful skype interviews my boss finally told me she had found one.

Me: "Great"

Boss: "But, ahhhhh, he's..... um....."

Me: .... ....

Boss: "He's a... um...."

Me: .... ....

Boss: "He's a.... a..... a coloured person."

Me: (blink)

When I am in public by myself I get a lot of coy smiles from girls. When I'm in public with my black colleague I get a lot more wide-eyed expressions, muttered comments and laughter.

My Korean friend (she is amazingly white; magnificent by Chinese standards) was having a conversation with an officer in the immigration department who proudly told her she doesn't give visas to black people.

Yes, Chinese people are embarrassed about blackness, and look down on people for having dark skin. Their racism is a real thing. Not an imaginary thing in the minds of racist people.

As to Chinese calling you waigouren, I can only repeat what I have said numerous times on this thread, in 3 years in this country I have only ever been called waigouren once and  that was by two young kids and to my ear, not in a nasty way. This is so accurate.

'employee A to employee B blah blah waiguoren blah blah

ta tingbudong blahablah'

I generally can go about 150 times overhearing this conversation without reacting but then the next 3 or so hearing  it will really get my blood boiling and I will react in one way or the other. And then I go the next 150 or so and I am cool again. This is my cycle.

It's like "hello...hahaha". 150 cool, next 3 not so cool. The thing is, I feel sorry for those 3 because to them a negative reaction would seem like a huge over-reaction. For them, they never seem to realise their "hello...hahaha" is like the 27 584th time I have heard it! But the Chinese always deliver it like it's super-fresh material.

hugh g asliar, if anyone is a racist it is you. you seem to think being chinese excludes them from the standards of a civil human society. what do you think they are too inferior to meet those standards?

let's use a dog as an example, we accept the fact that dogs will not use the toilet because they are lower life forms. so dogs poop onthe street and the humans clean up after it (because they caan't clean it up themselves.)

but humans have invented the bathroom toilet. whether it is sit down or squat there are toilets in every country. i hold chinese to the same standard as i would any other person or group of people. people should not poop (you or your baby) in a mall , public street, bus, airplane (get the picture). calling out waiguoren (or whatever the local word for it would be) is rude. i have never met a chinese person who told me it wasn't rude, even the ones who called out to me. (i exclude children from this) so again i hold chinese to the same standard as i would anyone. because chinese are human beings, and the same rules apply to them as with anyone else. but here is the problem, chinese seem to think that their being chinese gives them the privilege to break any rule they want. it is funny how you are trying to spread their message for them.

Hugh.G.Rection:

So by your logic the Chinese being racist excuses YOUR racism?
I'm not saying many Chinese aren't racist, that is NOT my point. I am saying YOU and MOST of YOUR posts ARE racist. The Chinese are irrelevant to that.
You are a blatant racist that is my point.

You call me a racist yet offer no proof, you make unsupported claims with extremely selective points. I call ALL racists when I see them Chinese or American, (or any other race) you only seem able to find Chinese racists. Oh and next comes the line this is a China site, but that does not disguise YOUR racism.

Edit: By the way your post above could be used as a pretty good definition of racism. If you hold yourself (or your race) as superior to another race you are racist. That post above fits that description quite well.

Hugh - There is a difference between criticising culture and race.

Chinese people are culturally conditioned toward crass and obnoxious behaviour (e.g. pointing, staring, ridiculing anyone different, lying, shouting at each other, spitting and defecating in public). Hong Kong people are the same race, but don’t do any of these things.

All the aspects of society that Crimo mentioned are valid cultural criticisms. Nobody is suggesting that Chinese ethnicity makes people dirty, greedy and uncivilised. Mainland Chinese culture (which originates mostly from Communism) does that.

Crimo - Excellent and concise post.

Hugh.G.Rection:

Samsara, that isn't racist, but Coc's is, You differentiate between sections of society and emphasise cultural reasons. Coc is saying ALL Chinese are so conditioned and inferring that he is not and hence superior. If he had said SOME Chinese are... or even MOST Chinese are .... that would have been much less of a sweeping racist generalisation. However, when you lump an entire race together in a negative manner and either say or infer that makes them inferior to you / your race, that is almost the definition of racism.

The difference between you and Coc however, is that I have given Coc dictionary (Merriam-Websters AND Oxford) definitions of this very thing in the past so he knows it is racist and continues to post like this making him doubly culpable. You may claim ignorance.

Coc, your racism is quite simply so ingrained you just cannot see it.

It is invariably your use of generalisations, when you say 'they' or similar words the inference is all of 'them' i.e. ALL Chinese. Therefore any subsequent detrimental comment almost HAS to be racist.

We've had this discussion before and I gave you the dictionary links to prove it. All you have to so is qualify your statements by using 'most' or 'some' or 'many' or even 'all mainland Chinese', but no, your constant refusal to do so can lead to only one possible conclusion; racism.

"It is invariably your use of generalisations, when you say 'they' or similar words the inference is all of 'them' "

yes i make generalized statements .

here is the definition: often disapproving 1 [count: a general statement : a statement about a group of people or things that is based on only a few people or things in that group

He made several sweeping/broad generalizations about women.

2 [noncount: the act or process of forming opinions that are based on a small amount of information

taken from learners dictionary. where in the meaning does it say that a generalization is a absolute statement? let's give some examples.

Muslims are angry at america. (does that mean every single muslim is angry at america no, an opinion based on a small amount of info.)

All muslims hate america. do you see the difference? you can't equate all muslims with muslims. the first statement is a generalized statement meaning (most that i have met fit this category, so i will assume most of the rest fir this category , not every single one)

if i say americans are ignorant. you have no problem with generalizations. if i say brits are arrogant. you have no problems with generalizations. but if i say chinese can't drive. you say i'm racist and that i am saying every single chinese person can't drive. and that i am prejudging every chinese person.

generalizing, absolute statement, and prejudging are 3 different things. further proof you can't be brit. because all brits are perfectionist pricks when it comes to the english language and they are masters in it's use. (do you get it?) or is this just more of your lieing for the ccp?

Well done Coc!

So go on read your own post! Again!

Try this bit from YOUR post.

"the act or process of forming opinions that are based on a small amount of information"

Based on a small amount of information, therefore you are saying 'they' which clearly infers 'all' then you actually mean 'some' or 'many' or even 'most', you are therefore casting your perceived failings of a minority onto the entire race.

That defines racism!  But I told and proved this to you over a year ago and you failed to learn then, I wonder why? Perhaps because you NEED to be racist, you HAVE to feel superior to someone and so you pick on the Chinese.

Just for you, a Merriem-Webster definition, so in future you know what you are:

1 : poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race

2 : the belief that some races of people are better than others

http://www.learnersdictionary.com/search/racism

and as you'll next try and say Chinese isn't a race (you did that last time remember?

1 : one of the groups that people can be divided into based on certain physical qualities (such as skin color) [count]

▪ It is their hope that the races can live in harmony. [noncount] ▪ The company does not discriminate on grounds of race, age, sex, or religion. — often used before another noun ▪ Politicians are trying to improve race relations. ▪ race discrimination — see also human race

2 [count] : a group of people who share the same history, language, culture, etc.

▪ the English race ▪ She is the descendant of a noble race. ▪ a mythical race of giants 3 [count] : a group of related or similar animals or plants

i've been the only foreigner on many flights. A game i play is time how long it takes for other passangers to say 'blah blah blah laowai blah blah waiguoren' within earshot.

happywanderer:

Just so long as they don't say gui lao.  I don't like that one.  I know it's not actually racist but being called ghost old doesn't sound nice.

I can't even make it through the work day without hearing that word, or laowai.

Here in Hangzhou I have been called "laowai" once and "waiguoren" 0 times during the past few months. This has surprised me since in SE Asia I was called "farang" (Thai/Lao for westerner) and "orang putih" (Indonesian/Malay for "white person") nearly every day, as others describe. I think Hangzhou is just a friendly and open city, relatively speaking.

I know friends, drives me nuts as well, but have learned to live with it.

They are just over curious, or plain crazy, and dont understand, because all chinese live in a non multicultural environment and country!

Normally listening to hello, hello, or laowai doesnt bother me, unless I have had "one of those days" where everything goes wrong, and Iam just emotional exhausted, then within 5 minutes of getting home;  laowai, I see friggin red!

Then I give this little kung foo f..... a piece of my mind!

In fact its rude and intimidating, and just plain bloody cheeky. Most of them need a good slap across the face, or kick up the ass, for them to wake up to reality!

Closed off way of thinking, the chinese mind, one can never fully comprehend it !!

Like sam, above, I actually found my foreignness pointed out more often in SE Asia than China, which I put down to two things;

1. The Thais are REALLY enthusiastic about pointing out foreignness; Thai people will just walk past you and say 'falang, falang' instead of hello. Any opportunity to point out that you

have the misfortune not to be Thai, they will take it. It's annoying, but there's no malice in it. The rest of SE Asia wasn't so bad, but once you learned the word for foreigner in any country, it was impossible not to hear it daily.

2. We lived in Urumqi, and I think my partner and I, both dark haired, were often taken for pale Uyghurs. It worked out well, since they wouldn't give a damn about a couple of Uyghurs... I did see a few heads snap round at warp speed around when people would hear us speaking English.
