I was wondering if there are any regulations banning outdoor grilling? I live in a small community, and there is a big open space between building, with a little pagoda and some water area. I was wondering if it would be possible to openly grill outside?
You see all those chuanr people grilling on the corners of the street, so I guess it should be ok?
Let me know what do you guys think.
Shouldn't be a problem. Even if it were, nobody will notice the smoke due to the pollution... I could be wrong, but... don't they sell grills in Walmart? I've seen a few there in Hunan province.

Thanks for your answer.
Yup, I have seen them in Walmart plus they are available on Taobao. Not too expensive and a nice way to entertain guests outside :) Only on those days when the pollution is not making everyone cough.
There is a guy near where I live that grills barbecue and he sells them 1 kuai per stick. If he can do it I'm sure you will be able to do it. Nobody questions him and he profits off of those sales. I'm not sure if you would want to be grilling these days because I just came from outiside and it's windy and cold!

Thank you for your comment.
I plan on having a barbecue party in like 2-3 weeks when it gets nicer, warmer and there will be more pollution-less days during spring :)
Hi guys, thank you for your answers.
One more thing.
What do you think I should do - 1) ask the building management or guards what they think beforehand or 2) just do it and if they make a fuss about it ask them to join me and my friends?
When it comes to the pollution, I don't think they would notice my grill lol
There are many disposable / portable / reusable grills online (for example on Taobao). I love to grill, used to do it all the time when I was home. The ones on TB are not so expensive and it would be great to just chill outside on a warm, sunny, pollution free day, which happen sometimes during spring in Beijing.
I decided to have a small get together once it gets warmers outside.

Just do it. Bring an extra leg of meat in case they complain.
If they come and try to give you crap, just play the dumb foreigner and hand over a shank while smiling. Play loud music with headphones in case they speak English... just keep jamming out to the music while they talk to you. "What?! I can't hear you *makes manic musical motions* Oh, have a shank!" Problem solved!
I don't see why it would be a problem. If for some reason someone complained you would just be asked to stop, nothing more.
Are you going to invite me ? Is it American BBQ? I could go for a good burger or some hot dogs.
On a side note.....even though I'm 99% sure it wouldnt be a problem..... mostt bbq places you do see on the streets are technically illegal. And they do get shut down from time to time (only to open back up the next day). I know a guy who does this for a living an he usually has his grill confiscated and a small fine once every couple of months.
The government also just recently announced some plans to get rid of BBQ's in urban areas to help reuce pollution. There's been been a lot of public outcry over it though and it's unlikely anything will come of it.
