Q: is it possible to spend 2 years in china and not see anyone spit on a bus or in a mall/ restaurant?

It's not possible to spend 2 days without seeing it, unless you never use those places.
I have even seen it on the plane flying in, though usually into the sick bag or a food/drink container. More than once on the floor, though.
If you are Stevie Wonder, it might be possible.

well, I have a friend who has been here for some years and he has never tried the busses, so he would probably not have seen anyone spit on a bus.
Other than that, I think I see these things pretty much every time I go out, even if it is just the 5 min walk to the local shop.
Of course it is possible! Many blind people come to China for extended periods of time, so there is not doubt that they do not see the things we do.
This is the only country that I have visited where there is a need to display "NO SPITTING" signs in food production areas. I guess it's the same in hospital operating theatres!
spitting is common on the trains, and sunday a lady snuck a puppy as a baby on the train to take to her hometown, made it from jinan to qingdao with a puppy wrapped in baby clothes, must have drugged the dog , saw it but no noise, pissing in front of the elevator doors or in the fake potted plants at the entrance to the mall are very common.
I suspect it's much more prevalent in some parts of the country than others. I'd be surprised, though...
I was once in class and one of my students turned around, hacked and spit his vile mouthful at the wall!!!
I was so shocked, I stood there in silence for a minute staring at him! No one else seemed the least bit bothered! I then harangued him for the next ten minutes telling him how foul that was!
I then added a new rule to my 3 rules, No Spitting in Class!!!
Probably not. .. . I was riding the bus and subway recently and both of those places someone spat on the floor. Inside the mall and sometimes restaurants I will see spit on the grounds. It's either that or chewing gum that someone spit out of their mouth!
Most Chinese people that I know do not like the spitting either.They tell me it is usually done by people from the country, who they don't like.
I've never seen a Chinese person react or freak out on someone for spitting, guess it's a face thing.
I don't think it's possible to spend more than five minutes without seeing such things. Just on my way to this internet cafe I had three people vomit all over me, a young homeless child defecate on my face, and an elderly woman slit her throat and bleed all over my nice new loafers. What a place.
