Q: Is it really essential to wash new clothes before wearing them?

Chinese friends swear by it, and while I can understand the reasoning for stuff like underwear, is it really that important to wash a tshirt before wearing it for the first time?

To me, NO, I never did and never suffer any consecuences from it.

But to my Chinese beloved GF, nothing made out of cloth can be used unless washed first.  Whatever, it is not limited to underwear.

Her reasoning is that she has no idea of what that particular piece of cloth has been in previous contact with, and their fear to get sick.

It is part of their culture, so do not try to explain it, if you arre alone, do as you please, and if you have a locl GF or wife, do as she says, it does not cost you any extra.  It is one of those things not worth arguing about.  At least to me........

I like to wash new clothes before I wear them because you never know who tried them on before you, I don't care where I buy from.

I agree with HappyExPat.  Being a typical western guy, I don't really care if new clothes are washed before I put them on or not.  But the wife cares.  And since it isn't a deal breaker for me, I give in and wash them before I wear them.

But relationships are all about comprimise.  So when it comes to taking ALL the plastic off o new things (electronics, chairs, appliances, etc...) she lets me win and I get to peel away.

According to the data collected from many reputed clothings
manufacturer, from China and other parts of the World, they
use a number of different types of dyestuff, detergents and
other chemicals, depends on the type of fabric and customers
demand. Most of those are not very skin friendly and some
are toxic to some degree.

Having said so, some manufacturers actually do a final
wash to take out all possible irritants, spcecially famous
name brands, to make it relatively safer.

But for T-Shirt, I don't think anyone should wear them
without washing-unless you have NO Time (!). Because,
Most Knit factories do not wash the T-Shirt at
all, that includes many name brands ( I have witnesed
myself).

Another key point is the way the clothings are displayed
and tried by many people. I have seen in one of the Famous
European chains (in Shenzhen), how girls are re-packing
all the clothings after people have tried them. So, when
you ask for a fresh one from the back, it isn't the FRESH
one, unforunately.

If you think it is important to wash your hands because
you are out for sometime, did shake hand with people,
touched many common public areas, then just think of
this: 100s of people might have tried the dress you are
buying today or wearing without washing.

However, as a Naturopathic Doctor, with over 15 years
experience in Canada, I request everyone to wash all
the NEW clothings you buy.

Best wishes in good health.

Clothes are manufactured in company and from reaching towards manufacturing process to the market they have to come many sort of chemicals and from many hands so dust and some other imprudent stick to them so it is better to wash before wearing as what they are they are not. business shirts

Yes, prudence is the mother of virtue.  One never knows who has tried on whatever and what illnesse, diseases, etc, the person (or those persons) has (or have).  Absolutely wash them and add some 9 degree alcohol vinegar to the rinse to make sure, here in China anyway.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
