No, it is not right!

Passport belongs to you only, and it must be in your possession all the time. It is required for ID in China, together with your FEC.

Except for few days/weeks for RP/visa processing, when you can get by with photocopy.

If you cannot get your passport back, turn to SAFEA for help.

Make sure, you have Working and Residence permit, before you contact SAFEA.

Really? You must carry your passport and not allow anyone to have it.

Do people do any research before coming to China? I mean, after they take it to process the visa, it should be returned directly back to you. Any problems, call the police.

There are always 'tiny' problems in China: 'In Dalian PSB, only one person speaks English, and appointment is required.

No, tell them to give your passport back. They are just using this as a way of preventing employees from running away because this country severely lacks trust.

You got to be Kidding , Never ever hand over your passport to anybody to keep hold of unless it is by the Cops and you are in their custody . You are now effectively a hostage, If they do not return it tell your embassy it was taken  and get another one . then get the hell out of dodge . The next thing is they will not pay you till they recoup their outlay and then not pay you what you agreed to  I am a little sus on a new user with a question like this but I guess their are people that just do not know when they are being ripped off

CARLGODWIN1983:

Newbies unfortunately do fall in to this trap.

I know it's said that you should do your research before you come, but sometimes, it really isn't that easy, and you do get lied to still.

Hell, in 2010, I was lied to about having a job in EF in Tongzolin in Chengdu.  Not by EF themselves, but by an agent.  Same agent did similar with a friend of mine.  ONly, on that occasion, the agent tried getting my friend to work for EF instead of Web because the agent got paid more in commission by EF.

Fortunately for my friend, he found out Web paid more, and subsequently left.

No, it's not okay. Have you heard about forced labor? Do you want to be a victim?

Insist that the company gives you your passport back! If they don't do it immediately (don't belive the next week BS), call your embassy!

No, This only done with Filipino's and Africans because they're a flight risk and their visa's cost more...

Rin:

Why are they a flight risk? How much more does the visa cost? Surely not that much more?

Agreed, but when a higher offer is given they like to jump to the next best offer, it's a common trend in Philippines known as Call Center Jumping, It's also a practice out here as well. I worked in PH for 6 years and seen it here in China with my Filipino friends, in one school if a Filipino wants their passport they must give a 3000 RMB deposit before the school hands over their passport.

china(supposedly) has to abide by international law, so if you die in a bus, taxi or train and they cant identify your dead ass and notify the foreign government embassy in 72 hours it creates a diplomatic problem,

so you are required to have your passport in your possession so they dont have to work hard to see who the dead body is, and the fine for not having your passport on you is 500 rmb,

tell your school that you were in a taxi accident and did not have your passport and you were fined 500 rmb and you want them to pay the fine, they will give you your passport back very quickly.

Nobody should hold your passport, that's not right. Passport should be in your pocket all the time. The same as no company is allowed to hold Chinese ID card

The passport actually belongs to your government that issued it.  Stealing a passport is illegal. Your should contact your embassy and have them re-issue another to you and contact the local PSB

Just get the passport back.  End of story.  Be wary and cautious next time.  You should have never done it this time.  Would you have done it in your home country?

Even though i knew my passport had to be given temporarilly to the PSB to get the RP, i insisted that my school give me a receipt saying that this was where it was. As posters above said: does no-one do research before coming here ??? And yes, there are too many posts that we don't hear the conclusion of.......
