Q: Is it safe to consume Chinese vinegar?

Recently read that many of the vinegars on supermarket shelves in China contain industrial chemicals that are not suitable for consumption - yet another food scandal!
Does anyone know if this is true and which brands to avoid?

The vinegar scare is referring to a famous brand of vinegar from Shanxi. There've been claims that they mixed cheap acid into their product which reduces the ferminting time from one year to a month (sounds plausible that they'd like to cut corners like that for the sake of mass production) but the company has been refuting it sharply. Some additional tests were done which showed that 94% met the standard (not sure what the deal was with the other 6%), so I think vinegar is safe to consume by and large.

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
