Chinese friends of mine have been pushing me to downloading and installing QQ but I'm a little reticent of downloading Chinese software...
Is QQ safe or is it loaded with spyware and other various crap?
12 years 28 weeks ago in Web & Technology - China
I use it... yeah it's loaded with various crap, but it's about as safe as facebook now a days.
QQ International is fine as far as i am concerned and works well.
no problems with qq international. and it sort of warns you when the govt is monitoring you. it will force you to change your password or keep logging you out. but i think they may have fixed that, so the govt can easily monitor you without causing your qq intl to act up.
Why would you even want to use that piece o' crap? Sorry, but any program that actively scans my computer for files is A VIRUS. It's reporting that SOMEWHERE.
Also, once you install it, it's next to impossible to fully uninstall all of the crap it buries in your system - windoes directories, .dll files, you name it.
Back a little while ago, QQ and 360 (a piece of crap Chinese anti-virus "software") were at odds with each other and could detect each other's programs on a person's computer. They both gave messages saying "you can't use this program unless you uninstall QQ/360". But in the license agreements, they both said they didn't scan your computer (except for 360, which said it does but only for virus searching).
Obviously these are NOT trustworthy companies so I wouldn't try it.
Up to you of course, it's your computer. As a side note, I NEVER install anything Chinese on my computer.
icerock:
you are too exaggerate, the goverment can't monitor your QQ information, the QQ will scan you disk without your permission, but this only let QQ company take advantage from other competitor, not for goverment . if you want contact with chinese friends,QQ is the good choice, most of us have QQ number, it more accordance with chinese habits, people like it .

icerock -- "The qq will scan your disk without your permission but .." - Exactly. That's the problem.
Do you actually believe the government does not have access to/does not access the information from QQ?
If so , wow .
I downloaded QQ and a couple of other Chinese software on my last laptop. It was brand new and lasted only a year before it eventually broke down.
Avoid Chinese software like the plague. As Mr. Tibbles said, they will bury a ton of crap that you will never be able to remove.
Bad news bears. Definately avoid. HoweverI find a lot of Chinese also have msn, so maybe this is a suitable alternative for you.
I have had QQ for nearly 5 yeears also other Chinese software never had a problem ,suggest its a puter problem not Chinese Web sites also use 360 never a problem...
Once I downloaded QQ, I just kept getting pop-up ads all the time. My computer has been getting slower too so I'm sure it's connected to QQ in someway. It's also likely that they throw in a little spyware present as a thank you.
I use QQ International and QQ Player. To be SAFE you must download them from the TENCENT SERVICES or QQ INTERNATIONAL's websites. DO NOT DOWNLOAD THESE FROM ANYWHERE BUT THOSE SITES. My computer has never had ANY PROBLEMS caused by these programs. I did allow a friend of mine to download a bundle of qq games, messenger and as it turned out, some "malware" but that was easy to get rid of. I have these 2 years and before that I had qq 2009 and 2008 on my E-Machine running Windows XP.
freakboy:
Yeah well tencent is listed on the international warning web sites as being virus and spyware infected and out side of China when you try to load it you will get virus warnings.
QQ International and all of its language flavours are very safe these days. As the poster said above, only download them from the QQ International site itself. In any case, if you are nervous, just do a virus scan / root kit scan / trojan scan of the program before you install it on the computer.
Tibbles is right. I downloaded QQ international - from the proper website - after my boss finally forced me too (as well as pressure from my wife, and every stupid Chinese idiot I've met "YOU HABA QQ?????" "No." "WHAAAAATA? OHHHH MAAIIIII GOD-A!!!! MSN????" "No." "NO IS POSSIBLE!!! AHHH!!"). It comes bundled with dozens of hidden processes. I've uninstalled it, and tried to take care of as much of the bundled malware as I can, but honestly I'm probably going to have to reformat to get rid of that Chinese disease.
QQ is awesome!! I love being monitored by the government. You can have fun with it, and be sure to type in certain key words while talking to friends to draw their attendion....good times. But my computer is slower now and I get asked 10 times a day to be friends with strange women.
GuilinRaf:
Watch out for those women! Some of those are "tea merchants" who will try to meet you to sell you some "tea".
Is it safe to cross the road after looking both ways, is it safe to walk your dog in the morning, is it safe to take a class in jiu jitsu? If you say yes to all of these questions then yes it is safe to download QQ.
