A few years ago I would have immediately said yes without even batting an eyelid. Nowadays, I'm more skeptical about the quality of the ingredients used. In general, I would say most of it is fine in terms of germs and I myself have never gotten sick from eating street food. Things like jianbing, shaobing, youtiao etc. are all either deepfried, fried or baked hence killing any germs. What I'd be most worried about however is not the germs, but whether they use re-used oil, whether the packaging they use is safe to serve food in and whether they ingredients they claim to use are actually the ones they use.
For example, youtiao is notorious for containing washing powder to make it so puffy, soy milk in plastic cups without official labelling is made using untreated tap water and in vats that are never cleaned, the oil to deep fry things in may have been used 20 times, the plastic bag they serve your jianbing in may be carcinogenic.... these are the things that I'm starting to get more freaked out about because there just isn't enough supervision and food quality control here.
Sorry to say that, but eat in China is never safe.
Even go to a nice restaurant, or u may think to cook yourself is safer, that's not true. Better don't eat anything.
We may just die young!
There is a reason that every Emperor had an official food taster.
Ask your enemy to dinner, not your friend. Have them eat first. lol
Just observe how many locals are eating and spend a few moments to watch their reactions before you jump in and buy.
If you live in China long enough, even the best restaurants can give you Mao's revenge. Ever peek into a commercial Chinese kitchen? You will NOT eat there. At least the street vendors are somewhat clean.
Just take your chances, eating is like crossing the street in China. You are at constant risk but that is part of the adventure.
I've never heard of any story that would warned me about eating street food so I would say it is safe. I've eaten street food before, but if you do eat street food you should go check out the Beijing food street around WangfuJing. THey have a line of people selling street foods from scorpions to all sorts of meats. Just follow the crowd and try a couple!
Never got sick from street food but got terribly sick from tofu...You can see the street food and how it's made and you can tell that it's not good healthy food. I guess it's ok to have a bit of bbq when you're out drinking but I wouldn't go eat on the street everyday.
Not all. But look for skewer stands who have more fat than meat on the stick. A friend just told, that sometimes they serve the cats and dogs from the streets.
For years I ate in disgusting places and never had a single problem. The past 2 weeks, I had food poisoning 2 times from eating from those food wagons. So now... Try to eat in filthy tiny shops rather than the wagons, especially at night...
not safe but delicious.
I have already got used to the unsafe food
