When I opened my first salary bank account a while ago, my Chinese colleagues urged me not to check the online payment options on the form. They deemed that too risky. How safe is it actually to use your bank account online?

My experience is from back home, where I had my credit cards hit more than once. So, I learned my lesson, bought a prepaid MasterCard at Walgreens, and use it only to buy on line, charging it as required every time I buy something with it.
In China, in a way I have done the same. My main account is at one bank. I have another account in another bank (not branch of same bank) which I call "My wet dreams" account. I deposit money on it as I save, and I use that account for travels and to purchase things I may want or need. And I do have a third account, at another bank, which I use (and deposit money to cover purchases) only to buy at places like Taobao. Current balance is from 20 to 30 yuan. If I buy something that costs 100 Rmb, I will deposit 80 prior to order it.
So, I can not say if it is risky or not, but it allows me to sleep soundly at night.
Same as HappyExPat but reduced version. I have my salary account and another for online payments/shopping/whatever uses.

Anyways I have noted it is quite difficult they can use your card...they would need your phone, your passwords, username, the bank security usb key...it is actually a hard work to steal from my poor poor savings I guess.
