Because damn, every now and then I come across someone who stinks so much that I want to leave the room, literally stinks of rotten meat covered in old sweat.
And these are not poor ass uneducated migrant workers (who I forgive for dubious hygiene) but white collars, managers, urbanites with college education or above.
Water is so cheap here, what does it cost to take a shower? 0,02 maos, as for soap you pay 25 for one big bottle and it lasts for 2 months, no excuse, c'mon people.
It is not the price of the water, but that Chinese in general hat to waste even one jiao.
And to make it worse, they do not use deodorant either.
Just check when you visit a Chinese home, and ask to go to toilet. You will see a bucket under the faucet, and water dripping into it. That water does flush the toilet, wash dishes, and many other uses. My neighbor water bill is from 2 to 3 kuai per month. Mine is around 100.

I grew up not to waste water too,,, but my biggest turn-off of taking a shower here is how the damn bathroom is the shower stall. and the way the hot-water heater is bolted to the side of the wall sitting there plugged into a 220v electrical outlet. I keep thinking I'm gonna get electrocuted to death taking a damn shower! That really pisses me off. and I haven't been in a damn bathtub in over 10 years. some things the West really does do better. Jacuzzi tub being one of them.
*yeah, I know it's the amps that kill ya
The issue you raise makes a fine management question in a job interview when recruiting a manager. How do you tell an employee s/he has body odor?
"And these are not poor ass uneducated migrant workers (who I forgive for dubious hygiene) but white collars, managers, urbanites with college education or ..."
These white collars, managers......etc. many, especially those in the early 30s, came from peasant family. After school (all the way until high school) they helped their family with farming activities. One such guy told me all the way until age 8 his entire family lived without electricity. The first time in his life he saw a light bulb was age 8.
In this case, the question becomes how do you tell him/her, who can be just a friend, or gf (not your wife, but generally speaking), s/he has body odor? These ones still have a chance. The older ones, being tortured by poverty and become penny pinchers I wouldn't waste my time. Let time do the job, i.e. they die out.
This may help with the "how to" part. http://goaskalice.columbia.edu/answered-questions/how-tell-someone-you-smell
It is too much to ask that Q, when in Heilongjiang, outside of the main cities, because they hold warm water in tea pots .
It was never about the money. It was always about the education.
