Q: Is it true that if the police catch you stealing something valuable, they wont put you in jail?

And you wont suffer any type of punishment whatsoever? I heard this rumour but honestly I find it a little hard to believe.

It's not true! I heard someone got away with some expensive diamonds. The only reason they weren't thrown in jail was because they never caught them.

Don't kid yourself. OH wait yes it is true, So go out and rob a bank or one of those armed cars they have with the guys standing around carrying potato guns.

I understand if you steal a car they will buy you coffee.

I've watch people steal and police/security guards turn a blind eye. I don't know what the rule is, but its probably not enforced....

you definitely don't hear enough about bank robberies here...i sort of curious if that were to go down.

spud guns...now thats a market that would thrive in china

why do i get a thumbs down? i didn't do the stealing

Since I will not take a chance of loosing my visa, I do not steal even a candy (chocolate bar) from the displays like many do.  I do know a group of college girls, they go on a shoplifting afternoon to stores and do make a killing, walking out with a dozen bras, panties, blouses and a bunch of pants, one on top of the other.  They claim they never got caught, and for them it is only fun.  But with my luck, I will be stopped by taking one peanut from the store floor.

I used to own a convenience store back home, shoplifting drove me nuts.  So, I do not do onto others what I do not want done onto me.  The month my running inventory shank by $ 3,000 US dollars, I was happy.  One month I lost $ 25,000 and almost had a heart attack.

Maybe if a Chinese is caught, not much may happen.  But I am sure, if a foreigner is caught stealing something valuable, all kind of shit will fly.

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

Actually, I have seen shoplifters beaten nearly to death on two occasions when they were caught.  They don't need to call the police -- if they catch one, they simply meet out justice themselves.

I concur with HappyExPat above -- it's not something that I am even about to test.  From what I hear, falling into the hands of the Chinese police is not exactly the most pleasant experience that there is, speaking succinctly.
