Q: Is it true it's illegal for foreigners to work over 5 years in same place?

Was having a drink with a fellow expat and couldn't tell if he was kidding or not. Is there really a law in China against foreigners working 5 straight years at the same place?

That's the oldest one in the book. There are a bunch of variants and all of them are horse hockey. Or at least, I've met people who've been in the same place over five years, and there's nothing on any government web site.

The law isn't enforced but it's actually as a foreigner you must return home for at least 6 months after a five year stint in China, the law was created about 8 years ago when the US, Canada and other powerhouses were trying to force their way into the bank accounts of their citizens working abroad, it was a way to force the Expats back home where it would be easier to catch them with tax offenses

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
