Q: Is it true you can't *legally* switch companies without leaving China.

I get offered jobs better than the one I have now just about every week.

I know that if a company has the right connections, it can be done. But I'm talking the letter of the law here. If I fully 100% legally wanted to switch jobs without going back and starting the Visa from scratch, could I?

Yes, you do not have to go back and start from scratch if you already work legally in China with all permits and visa.  You must give proper notice and get a release letter from current employer.  Of course, your new employer should be the one going to PSB and getting your residence permit and work permit changed to reflect a new employer.  You do not go to PSB please, if you do they may tell you to leave China since you are no longer employed, I have seen it happen.  Let the new employer handle the change of employer thing.
At least that is the way is done in Guangxi province

That was depressing, but thank you. I now understand the meaning of this :) :(

As long as you have a valid residence permit in your passport, you can quit a job, give notice, whatever and get a new job.

Your new company will need to convert your current work permit or foreign experts license because you need to be "sponsored" by a company here.  You'll need to provide your new company with all the usual documents, your current alien work permit/FEL, and a seperation letter from your previous company (with the company chop on it).

This is a fairly easy process.  You won't have to leave China or anything.

You will get issued a new visa/permit in your passport (for 1 year because of a new company) and a week later you'll get the AWP/FEL again (depending on the job) which will be sponsored by the new company.

You don't even have to take a medical test.

I've walked out on a job here saying I quit and got a new one a month later with no issues.

Your former employer, NO MATTER WHAT, is required to give you the separation letter by law.  Otherwise they are responsible for you and can be fined because if you do something wrong, you're still sponsored by them.  Tell them that and they'll hand it over.

Your new company should take care of the rest.

Ok, just to make sure I'm 100% clear: I have a residence permit, and a blue piece of paper with government stamps that says 外国专家来华工作许可证. If I take this with a release letter to a new employer, I'll be alright?

Localla:

This is a new thing....government permit maybe is different...i think it's better you ask the company's HR who is going to hire you, they should sort it out for you.....In general sense..I think you wont have problem to switch it....

You need to get a release of service certificate from your old company that you will present to your new company and then you don't need to leave.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
