Q: Is it unconvincing that China has little or no external evidence in all it's territorial claims?

Almost all China's evidence in all it's territorial claims consists of documents produced in China. In particular, "recently discovered" maps and journals, which China refuses to be allowed to be authenticated by outside sources. There is virtually no credible evidence produced outside China.

This includes the border disputes with Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Russia, India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, North Korea, international waters and probably others.

In almost all cases, China has previously signed agreements with these countries finalising the disputes, but is now unilaterally "rectifying" those agreements.

China refuses to allow the U.N. to adjudicate in any of these disputes, except in the Senkakus, where China makes the ridiculous claim that it's continental shelf actually ends at the Mariana Trench.

Should China just give it up, and try to get along with others?

if they had a navy before 1949 , taiwan would not exist, not sure how you control anything without a navy.

dont remember the date but britain gave them some money for the navy and the government made a ship of jade and used it as a restaurant in beijing.

Traveler:

Taiwan was part of Japan prior to 1949. China conceded it to Japan in 1895. When the Americans occupied Japan in 1945, they allowed the then-legitimate Chinese government into Taiwan. It is still protected by America. These days, I think they are truly two separate countries.

yes quite clear, my point is that the nationalist would have never made it across the formosa strait if the navy had existed to stop it. hard to claim something because someone once went fishing there. i think these are hornets nest they can use to stir people up and not pick on the party when the economy starts going bad. a hidden ace to cheat in the game of control later.

Totally agreed, but the communists wouldn't have seized power if the Japanese hadn't destroyed China's military. And, in turn, Japan was able to march in and take over because the communists were tying up China's military with a civil war.

If it wasn't for the Japanese, the communists would never have come to power.

Making evidence as a way of gaining a casus belli is as old as man himself. Just look at the BS reason China invaded Tibet - Can I say that here?

I wold have to say that the Chinese government is being stupid in the extreme... not just by making such claims, but moreso by actually thinking that those other nations are just going to hand over there territories on their say so... I mean, really, that's just plain idiotic!

Besides which, if that sort of BS is going to fly, the whole world would completely change.

Who's that British comedian who did a skit about the Brits taking over India "because we have a flag. You don't have a flag, so you don't own it, but we have a flag, so we can claim it now!"

MissA:

That would the inestimable Eddie Izzard - "we stole countries with the cunning use of flags... I claim India for Britain.... you can't claim us, we live here.... do you have a flag?... no flag, no country!"

And, erm, that's not just applicable in the case of India, but applies a little closer to (our) home as well.

I don't know the history about this place. The only thing that I know now is that Japan is a small country with very little land compared to China in the first place. I also heard part of Japan was sinking in the ocean which is not good news because I loved it in Japan when I visited Tokyo and Hakone. I'm always surprised by how much land one country has compared to the other. It's kind of like if I were playing poker and I started out with a stack 10 times the size of everybody else's.

nevermind:

Yes, because historical and economic elements have nothing to do with how much land they accumalated untl now.

Dude, haven't you read? They have maps...MAPS! From 1,000 years ago that show they definately sailed to these places. This precedent also confirms that Greece owns most of Europe. JESUS!

Shining_brow:

OMG, that so explains why all of Europe is in such a bad place - it's all Greece's fault!

The Australian historians agree the Chinese were in Australia 500 years before the Europeans, but they don't seem to want Australia...

Yes. China rightfully belongs to Mongolia - based on historical precedent.
