If it's true are there ways around this problem?

shandong will let you go to 65 with a good physical, but most provinces in the south enforce 60, we have 2 teachers that hit 60 in guanzhou that work with us now.
Yes it's true for most of China.
Only places I've heard of issuing work permits for over 60's is Beijing & Shanghai but only for high level jobs.
No way round it unless, I think, you can get a "permanent" resident card and those are hard to get.
I knew an American guy who taught regular ol' ESL at some run-of-the-mill college in Guangzhou. He was over 60 and said that he got his RP but it was an exception somehow. I just mean that it is doable,,, or used to be anyway.
Employer is required to get an Insurance (I am not sure which one) for foreign employee with Z visa/RP, and apparently it's almost impossible to get an Insurance in China for person older than 60y.
You could work under different visa (F), because employer doesn't need to insure you and get you WP, but you are illegal under current Chinese law.
Yes, ESL job won't allow you a Z visa. But small jobs in small cities might welcome you. Salary will be 6000 to 7000.

Yep, I'd read that before but forgot about it. Though it does basically back up what is posted earlier about it applying to "foreign talents".

I work at a university in Hangzhou. We just had a foreign teacher leave who was 70 because they would not renew his residence permit (the university wanted to keep him forever haha)
So, I guess, the age is 70 in Zhejiang province for universities, not 60. I don't know how well this situation will apply to you.
The whole issue here is that health insurance is mandatory for all employees in China, foreign or natives. In China, health insurance companies will insure by regulation up to 65 years of age. But due to health issues, they are stopping coverage at 60. (GREEDY)
If you are a foreigner over 60 years and local coverage is denied, your only recourse is to obtain health insurance from abroad that will cover you while in China. Very expensive, do. But if you do get it, you will get the work visa,
Just be aware in case of Americans, coverage by Medicaid/Medicare is not accepted because you are not covered while in China.
Thanks a million for all the answers. Now I know why I get so my hits but no job invitation. The government here in shanghai said they would issues me a Visa if I found an employer, but now I know it’s the health insurance that’s the problem.
